A Dose Of Colemanism: It is Coming

September 30, 2021

By Caprice Coleman

Recently I was at the airport waiting for my luggage to come out on the belt. As you can imagine, there were plenty of people on my flight doing the same.

While waiting for my stuff, I noticed everybody getting theirs. Someone would see their luggage, grab it and go. It got to the point where I was getting frustrated that their luggage was coming and mine wasn’t.

I had to embrace that we were on the same flight, so it’s going to come eventually. However, doubts started playing in my head. Out of all the luggage, they might’ve lost mine. Just my luck.

I looked around and realized I was one of the last ones left from my flight. I looked at the belt and my luggage was there on rotation.

I didn’t notice it when it first came out. It had to have happened when I was preoccupied with everyone else getting theirs and me not getting mine.

I have done the same thing at times in my life. I’ve had friends on the same mission in life that seemed to get their success before me.

I admit there have been times when I’ve been waiting and wondering: Is mine next? I confess that in those times I would doubt if mine was even coming. I’d spend so much time looking at everyone else’s success that I didn’t even notice my own.

I’ve learned to appreciate and congratulate friends on their successes. It reminds me that I’m on the right course.

Eventually, just like my luggage came without me realizing it, so did my success. My comparison to people that were ahead of me kept me from seeing how far I’ve come.

Be careful in life not to compare your success with others. If it’s not already on the belt, know that it’s on its way.

Just something to think about. I call it a dose of Colemanism.
