Back at the beginning of November, it was reported by Andrew Zarian from the Mat Men Podcast that AEW was planning to hold one of their special events on TNT on January 8. On the AEW Full Gear media call, the AEW CEO, Tony Khan, confirmed the event.
The NWA used the event name “Battle of the Belts” back in the mid-1980s. The event was mainly hosted through the Florida territory. The territory was then owned by Eddie Graham. The events were live, and all featured a Ric Flair NWA World Heavyweight Championship defense.
During the November 24 episode of Dynamite, it was announced that AEW would be hosting their first ‘Battle of the Belts’ event in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, January 8. The event will take place in the Bojangles Entertainment Complex. Tickets for the event will go on sale on November 27 at 10 am EST.
