Bandido Retains ROH World Title Against Matt Taven In Mexico; Briscoes, Other ROH Stars Also In Action

September 18, 2021

Nearly one year after losing the ROH World Title, Matt Taven finally got his championship rematch, but his bid to regain the championship was unsuccessful.

ROH World Champion Bandido defeated Taven in the main event of the Big Lucha show in Mexico on Thursday night. It was Bandido’s third successful title defense since dethroning RUSH in July.

Taven had to relinquish his guaranteed title shot to Vincent per the stipulation of their steel cage match at Death Before Dishonor this past Sunday, but he got a title opportunity after all, thanks to Bandido.

Bandido handpicked Taven to be his challenger at the Big Lucha show, and the ROH Board of Directors granted the world champion’s request.

Taven is no stranger to Mexican wrestling fans. He won the NWA World Historic Welterweight Championship there in 2018 and headlined CMLL’s 85th Anniversary Show that same year.

Taven pulled out all the stops against Bandido and came within an eyelash of winning after hitting a Frog Splash. He tried to finish off Bandido with The Climax, but Bandido slipped out of Taven’s grasp and went on to hit 21 Plex for the hard-fought win.

After the match, Taven presented the belt to Bandido and embraced him.

“This belt meant everything to me, but now I’m proud that it’s yours,” Taven told him.

In other matches on the show involving ROH stars:
