GCW Owner Brett Lauderdale Confirms No Plants Were Used To Incite Fans To Throw Trash Into Ring Following Matt Cardona’s Title Win

July 27, 2021

GCW held their two night Homecoming event this weekend from the Showboat in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The first night was headlined by the GCW World Championship match between Nick Gage (c) and former WWE Superstar Matt Cardona.

Cardona and Gage put on an incredible show, as the two battled in one of the most talked about deathmatches in memory. In the end, Cardona was able to connected with the rough ryder, and scored the pinfall over Gage to become the new GCW World Champion.

Following the match fans showered the ring with garbage during Cardona’s celebration, before he eventually ran out of the arena through a rabid crowd.

The match was the talk of the wrestling world this weekend, and drew heavy criticism from wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer who called the crowd reaction an embarrassment to the industry. This take was not a popular one for many online, as Meltzer drew a lot of backlash for his “hot take.” He later doubled down and accused GCW of hiring plants and placing them in the crowd with instruction to be the first to throw their trash, with the intent to provoke others to follow suit.

GCW even joined in on the fun, and released a limited edition t-shirt featuring Meltzers tweet.

Joey Janela commented on Meltzer’s claim, and mocked the notion that plants were used. Janela asked fans if they had ever wanted to be a “fan plant” at a wrestling show, and if they wished to incite and encourage a riot following a disappointing finish. He the asked Meltzer if they could buy an ad in the wrestling observer newsletter.

“Have you ever wanted to be a “fan plant” at a wrestling show? Incite & encourage a riot after a disappointing result of a professional wrestling match? Well boy I have some news for you we are accepting applications at @GCWrestling_ hit us at [email protected]

GCW owner Brett Lauderdale commented on Meltzer’s report that they hired plants to incite the near riot following Cardona’s World Title victory. Lauderdale said that GCW successfully worked the “smartest mark of them all.” He then confirmed that there were no plants, and what we saw was 100% authentic.

“Let the record show that this weekend, GCW successfully worked the smartest mark of them all. I’m sorry @davemeltzerWON, there were no plants and what you saw was 100% authentic. You’re in denial and out of touch and you’re embarrassing yourself.”

GCW returns to action in September with two shows during All Out weekend, which will feature a War Games match between 44OH! and Nick Gage’s Murder Death Kill Crew.
