Revisiting Last Thursday’s Gauntlet for the Gold
FREE FULL MATCH: Gauntlet for the Gold | IMPACT! May 12, 2022
Gauntlet for the Gold has created some of the greatest moments in IMPACT Wrestling history, including Ken Shamrock becoming the new NWA World Heavyweight Champion at NWA-TNA PPV #1, as well as Gail Kim becoming the first-ever Knockouts World Champion at Bound For Glory 2007. As IMPACT prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary, Gauntlet for the Gold made its return to crown a new #1 Contender for Josh Alexander‘s IMPACT World Title at Slammiversary, LIVE June 19th on pay-per-view.
Longtime friends and tag team partners, Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley, kicked off the 20-man Gauntlet. Sabin would go on to have an outstanding performance, making it all the way to the final two and competing longer than anyone else in the Gauntlet at 37 minutes. Sabin would also tie for the highest number of eliminations with three.
Former IMPACT World Champion Moose and a determined Steve Maclin would also score three eliminations. Maclin was the final competitor to be eliminated before the pinfall and submission round, while Moose was eliminated moments before him following a vengeful attack from Sami Callihan.
Shark Boy made his long-awaited IMPACT! return, hot off his victory in last week’s exclusive Digital Media match but unfortunately floundered as he was the first to be eliminated from the Gauntlet.
In the end it was Violent By Design‘s maniacal leader, Eric Young, who was the last man standing as he spiked Chris Sabin with a vicious Piledriver to win Gauntlet for the Gold. Young scored three eliminations during his 20-minute run and will now square off with “Walking Weapon” Josh Alexander in an epic World Title showdown at Slammiversary.
