NJPW announced that Will Ospreay will vacate the IWGP Heavyweight Championship due to injury.
NJPW issued a statement earlier today announcing that IWGP Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay sustained a neck injury back on May 4th during Night Two of the company’s Wrestling Dontaku in Fukuoka event. Ospreay will not not be able to participate in NJPW’s next series of events, and will instead return to the United Kingdom to undergo treatment and rehabilitation on his injured neck. Currently, there is no timetable for his return.
NJPW will be making more announcements regarding the IWGP Heavyweight Championship at a later date.
New Japan Pro Wrestling published the following statement on their official website:
“On May 4’s night two of Wrestling Dontaku in Fukuoka, Will Ospreay sustained a neck injury. As a result, Ospreay will not be participating in the next series of events and will instead return to the UK for treatment and rehabilitation.
There is no timetable for Ospreay’s return to action at this time, and as a result, his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship will be vacated.
Further announcements on the status of the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship will be made at a later date. “
Will Ospreay was injured in a match where he defeated Shingo Takagi to retain his title. He was scheduled to wrestle Kazuchika Okada on May 29th in the Tokyo Dome for the IWGP Heavyweight Title, but obviously that match is no longer happening.
We will keep you updated if we hear anything more about the injury Will Ospreay sustained to his neck, or any news concerning the status of the IWGP Heavyweight Title.
