A Dose Of Colemanism: Don’t Settle For Less; Better Is Closer Than You Know

My son’s 16th birthday is this week. He’s named some things gift-wise that he wants (video games-type stuff). However, there is one thing he’s determined to get whether we get it for him or not: an audio interface.

Chayce loves music. He writes, performs and wants to produce it. He’s actually really good.
Anytime he gets money, he sets it aside to eventually buy his own interface.

This was pushed up a notch when one of his mentors gifted him a very nice studio microphone. (I’ll talk about having a great support system in a future Dose.) He’s found a way to bring this up in most conversations, explaining to my wife and I what he’d be capable of doing if only he had an audio interface.

We decided to get him one for his birthday. Chayce and I went out today to let one of our friend’s dog out while they were out of town. On the way home, we stopped by the GRID (a goodwill computer store).

We stop by there from time to time to get gaming-type stuff for a cheap price. We’re not in this store two minutes before he’s already pulled a clerk aside wanting to know if they just happened to have any interfaces. They did. Two of them.

The clerk explained that these were off-brand interfaces but promised they worked. Chayce wanted either one immediately. Now I couldn’t tell him we already got him a brand new one. So I told him not today, maybe we’ll come back before his birthday to pick it up. He didn’t say much, but I could read his disappointment.

I asked him what was wrong. He said, “All I need is right there and it’s only $50. If someone else sees that they’re going to buy it before the store realizes they priced it too low.” I replied, “But it’s used and off-brand.” It didn’t matter to him; it was an interface.

Many times we want something so bad that we are willing to settle for it in whatever form it comes, not knowing that just a little ways down the road is better.

The funny thing is it’s in the house. He walks past it every day. As a matter of fact, he’s on top of it while I’m writing this because it’s under my bed and he fell asleep in my room watching TV with my wife. He has no clue that his brand-new, nice-grade interface is so close to him. It’s just not time to present (pun intended) it to him.

Don’t settle for less when you’ve been putting forth your best. Greater is coming and it’s SO much closer than you think. Sometimes life is just waiting on the right time for it to come to pass.

Something to think about. I call it a dose of Colemanism.
