A Dose Of Colemanism: Voices

A friend of mine was telling me about how things weren’t going good for him. It seemed everyone was against him; definitely a time in his life that he would like to fast-forward through or rewind to change something. I’m sure we all can relate.

I asked him who he’s referring to when he says everybody is against him. He couldn’t name many people, but the ones he named he cared for deeply. I understood him, but his wording was wrong.

The word “everybody” is ua-inclusive. He was putting a ridiculously huge number on a situation in which only a few existed. Saying “everybody” adds so much weight to an already heavy burden.

I assured him that there are far more people for him than against. This is a truth for so many. It’s easy to look at our life situations and feel that everyone is against us or wants to see us fail, when this may only be true for one or two people.

There are more than 7 billion people in this world (yep, looked it up). In your circle or surroundings, there are people who want to see you flourish, and others with enough issues of their own.

I’m saying this in hopes of easing some of the stress many feel. The world isn’t against you. I know it’s just a saying, but I’m a huge believer in our very words having power.

There are voices/thoughts in our heads that we choose to continue replaying. Some are saying “you can’t, shouldn’t or wouldn’t” and “how did you let this happen?” These voices get louder the more we feed them.

However, there are other voices in our heads as well — voices that are encouraging, giving insight, and wanting us to do better. They may not be as loud due to starvation. Feed those voices with affirmations of self-worth, and insightful views and listenings.

Eventually the other voices won’t be as loud. Life will be hard sometimes, but keep living. It gets better.

Just something to think about. I call it a dose of Colemanism.
