The highly anticipated return of ‘Doctor Who’ is now streaming on Disney+, introducing audiences to the dynamic portrayal of the fifteenth Doctor by Ncuti Gatwa, alongside the adventurous Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. Their escapades aboard the TARDIS promise encounters with space babies, musical maestros, and even The Beatles! Breaking from tradition, this season is boldly presented as a fresh start, departing from the traditional numbering system and aligning with the approach of ongoing comic series. We were fortunate to chat with Ncuti, Millie, and the current showrunner Russell T. Davies, gaining insight into their vision for the upcoming adventures.

Terrell – Hi Millie, Hi Ncuti, Hi Russell how are you Today? I just wanted to say the Devil Chord episode, It was great and it was an amazing episode worth watching more than once.

Terrell – Now that we are in this new era of Doctor Who where there is more fantasy/storybook than science fiction. What is the balance you are trying to keep between the two genres now?

Russell – A good healthy balance of doing it some and not doing it at all. You have seen the opening episodes that are immediately followed by the episode that Ncuti Referenced called “Boom” by Steven Moffat, which is very science fiction and very down to earth, down to the physical rules that apply that are rock solid.

Russell – I think that as long as you keep moving and keep changing it, Doctor Who has always done this back in the 60s when the doctor met the celestial toy maker who lived in a fantasy realm and played games with him. There is a marvelous Patrick Troughton story from 1968 called “Mind Robber” where they get lost in a world of fairy tales where they meet Rapunzel, Gulliver, and superheroes and it is completely bonkers.

Russell– it is not particularly a new thing, but I do like amping it because I think when you’re against someone like Jynx Monsoon as Maestro all rules are off, you can not stand there and talk Maestro down, fight Maestro, so it makes Ncuti and Millie act their hearts out in defeating Maestro and I think we have a great show that keeps that balance going. Thank you so much Terrell that was a wonderful question.

Terrell – Thank you so much for a great response

‘Doctor Who’ season 15 is streaming now on Disney+ and airs on BBC iPlayer in the UK.
