D.C. United Celebrates Cherry Blossom Night at Audi Field: A Night of Culture, Soccer, and Premium Vibes

April 13, 2025

There’s nothing quite like a live soccer match—and when it’s Cherry Blossom Night at Audi Field, the energy hits different.

On Saturday, April 12, D.C. United hosted their annual Cherry Blossom Night in partnership with the National Cherry Blossom Festival, honoring the arrival of spring, the 30th anniversary of Major League Soccer, and the club’s own legacy as one of the league’s founding teams. And while the result—a narrow 1-0 loss to FC Cincinnati—wasn’t in our favor, the entire experience was unforgettable.

🌸 A Night of Culture, Community, and Soccer

This year’s Cherry Blossom Night took on deeper meaning with the recent signing of Japanese midfielder Hosei Kijima, bringing a personal cultural connection to the festivities. The event also celebrated the 1912 gift of cherry trees from Japan to D.C.—a symbol of international friendship and shared heritage.

As Kijima put it:

“The blossoms are such an important part of Japanese culture, and to see them celebrated here in Washington while representing this club makes it even more special.”

Fans who arrived early were treated to complimentary premium tote bags featuring the official D.C. United Cherry Blossom crest—an instant collector’s item and the perfect keepsake from a night where soccer met tradition.

The pregame presentation was also a vibe in itself. It kicked off with Tyler Francis from Love Is Blind Season 7 planting the D.C. United flag, setting the tone for an exciting evening. Then came the player introductions, followed by a powerful Cherry Blossom-inspired taiko performance by Nen Daiko—a local drumming ensemble based out of Ekoji Buddhist Temple in Fairfax Station, Virginia. They’ve been bringing rhythm and energy to the D.C. area since 1994, and they absolutely delivered.

⚽ Matchday Energy: Passion on and off the Pitch

Coming off a tough 6-1 road loss to San Jose, D.C. United entered the match looking to reset. Head Coach Troy Lesesne made key changes to the starting XI, including giving Derek Dodson his first start of the season and reintroducing Randall Leal to the lineup after injury. Dominique Badji started alongside Christian Benteke in an effort to apply more pressure up top.

And while D.C. showed flashes of solid defense and created chances, they couldn’t break through Cincinnati’s backline. Gerardo Valenzuela, making his first start of the season for FC Cincinnati, scored an absolute banger in the first half—what would ultimately be the only goal of the night.

Despite the rain, the D.C. United fanbase never let up—chanting, cheering, and staying loud through the highs and lows. Even Christian Benteke, typically a threat in front of goal, was limited to just one shot. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Alex Bono came up big, recording seven saves to keep D.C. in the match, while Matti Peltola led all players with five tackles.

Another big moment came when Matt Miazga returned from injury for Cincinnati, making his first appearance since June 2024. Seeing him back on the pitch was a great moment for both sets of fans.

And if you were anywhere near the supporters’ section—you know they were the heartbeat of the night. The drums, the chants, the passion—they were the lift of the party from the first whistle to the final seconds. Rain couldn’t dampen the noise or the vibes coming from that side of the stadium.

🎟️ Game-Changer: All-Inclusive Experience at Audi Field

Events DC Club

Now let’s talk about the real MVP of the night—the Events DC Club All-Inclusive seating. This was my first time catching a game from the premium section, and honestly, I don’t think I can go back to regular seats.

From the moment you walk in, it’s a different experience:

  • All-inclusive food and beverages

  • Premium padded seating

  • Outdoor patio access

  • Unbeatable views and atmosphere

But what really took it to another level was the food. They had a variety of options, but my personal favorites? The herb-roasted pork loin—seasoned to perfection—and the roasted fingerling potatoes. That combo hit the spot. I also made more than one trip to the loaded nacho bar, because how could you not?

The culinary options rotate and include everything from:

  • Carvery menu

  • Chef’s features

  • Farm-fresh selections

  • Fan fare favorites

  • Decadent desserts

  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage options

🏁 Final Whistle: A Night to Remember

“Cherry Blossom Night is one of the most meaningful nights on our calendar,” said Danita Johnson, D.C. United’s President of Business Operations. “As we celebrate 30 seasons of MLS and our club’s deep roots in this city, we also honor the diverse communities that shape our fan base and the game itself.”

And that’s exactly what this night was—a celebration of heritage, resilience, local pride, and a global perspective.

Rain or shine, win or lose, D.C. showed up and showed out. Cherry Blossom Night was more than just a game—it was a reminder of everything that makes soccer, this city, and this club so special.
