Magic: The Gathering is heading back to school—but this time, the stakes are higher.

Wizards of the Coast officially unveiled Secrets of Strixhaven during a recent digital press event, offering a deep dive into the next evolution of the beloved magical university setting. Launching globally on April 24, the new set builds on the foundation of Strixhaven: School of Mages while expanding its world, gameplay systems, and collectible appeal in meaningful ways.
“Class is now in session… we’re excited to welcome you back to Strixhaven and give you an early look at what’s coming next,” the presentation opened.
This time around, the experience goes far beyond the classroom.
A Darker, Expanded Return to Strixhaven
Unlike the original visit to Strixhaven, Secrets of Strixhaven doesn’t just revisit familiar ground—it evolves it.
The set takes place in the aftermath of the Phyrexian invasion, with the world of Arcavios still recovering from devastating losses.
“We’re seeing and feeling that impact… the Biblioplex was destroyed… students suffered heavy losses,” explained narrative lead Lauren Bond.
But the focus isn’t just on destruction—it’s about rebuilding.
Players will explore not only the campus but also new regions beyond it, including five distinct research locations designed to expand the world-building and give the setting a broader sense of scale.
That shift matters. It transforms Strixhaven from a themed setting into a fully realized plane with long-term storytelling potential.
The Five Colleges Return—With Stronger Identity
The core of Strixhaven remains intact: its five colleges, each defined by a dual-color philosophy and gameplay identity.
- Prismari – Elemental arts and creative expression
- Lorehold – Archaeomancy and history brought to life
- Quandrix – Mathematics and reality manipulation
- Silverquill – Language, rhetoric, and influence
- Witherbloom – Life, death, and natural cycles

Each college now feels more mechanically distinct than before, moving away from shared systems toward individual gameplay identities tied to their themes.
“We wanted to… make each school feel unique,” the team explained, emphasizing a shift toward faction-style design.
That design philosophy carries across everything—from mechanics to Commander decks to card flavor.
New Mechanics Bring Strategic Depth
At the center of Secrets of Strixhaven is a suite of new and returning mechanics that redefine how players interact with spells.
Prepare (New Mechanic)
The headline addition is Prepare, which allows creatures to “store” spells and cast them later from exile.
“New preparation cards offer access to… famous incantations from the past and… new spells from the present.”
This mechanic introduces layered decision-making, as players must manage timing, board presence, and spell sequencing.
Paradigm (New Keyword)
Another standout is Paradigm, which effectively turns spells into repeatable effects.
“The first time a spell with paradigm resolves… you may cast a copy of it… each turn without paying its mana cost.”
It’s a mechanic built for long-game advantage and strategic planning.
College-Specific Mechanics
Each college also receives its own keyword identity:
- Repartee (Silverquill) – Triggers when targeting creatures with spells
- Opus (Prismari) – Rewards casting high-cost spells
- Infusion (Witherbloom) – Activates based on life gain
- Flashback (Lorehold) – Returns as the only legacy mechanic
- Increment (Quandrix) – Scales creatures based on mana spent

Together, these systems reinforce the idea that players aren’t just choosing decks—they’re choosing a philosophy of play.
Commander Decks Lean Into Identity and Worldbuilding

The five preconstructed Commander decks take things even further by immersing players directly into each college’s ecosystem.
Designer Daniel Holt emphasized that the goal was to make each deck feel like a lived-in part of Strixhaven:
“When you open one of these decks… it should really feel like the college that you are opening up.”
Each deck includes:
- A distinct gameplay engine tied to its college
- Returning characters with evolved abilities
- New legendary mascots as secondary commanders
It’s not just about gameplay—it’s about identity and storytelling.
Collecting Gets a Major Upgrade
If gameplay is evolving, collecting is going even bigger.
Serialized Headliner Card
At the top of the chase is the serialized Emeritus of Ideation, a premium card limited to Collector Boosters.
“This card… creates the perfect centerpiece for your… collection.”

Mystical Archive Returns
The fan-favorite Mystical Archive is back, now featuring:
- 65 total cards (25 uncommon, 25 rare, 15 mythic)
- One guaranteed card per Play Booster
- Enhanced art and updated frames
Each card represents iconic spells from across Magic’s history, reinforcing the academic theme of the set.
Premium Treatments and Variants
Additional highlights include:
- Borderless planeswalkers, dragons, and lands
- Japanese alternate-art Mystical Archive cards
- Silver Scroll foil treatments
- Field Notes-style cards inspired by student journals
- Special Guests cards featuring iconic reprints

“Lectures have never looked this exciting,” the team noted when describing Special Guests cards.
MTG Arena and Early Access
The set also launches digitally ahead of tabletop release, with Magic: The Gathering Arena debuting on April 21.
Arena will include:
- Full support for new mechanics
- Exclusive card implementations like Library of Alexandria
- Visual adaptations of alternate art styles

For newer players, Wizards is also introducing updated Welcome Decks to ease onboarding, rather than a traditional beginner box.

From Classroom to Battlefield: Strixhaven Evolves
What stands out most about Secrets of Strixhaven isn’t just what’s new—it’s how intentional everything feels.
This set:
- Expands the narrative scope of Arcavios
- Deepens gameplay identity across factions
- Elevates collectibility with meaningful chase cards
- Bridges nostalgia with forward-looking design
It’s not just a return—it’s a progression.
And if the original Strixhaven introduced players to the school, this new chapter is about what happens after graduation.
