Timbaland Interview

What were your initial thoughts when you got the call to be Executive Music Producer for an animated project with Apple TV+? Did they tell you it was animated in the original pitch?

Timbaland: “Man, when they hit me up about BE@RBRICK, I was like, ‘Wait, what?’ I had never done a full animated series like this before. But when I saw the vision—the creativity, the storytelling, the art—I knew I had to be part of it. And yeah, they told me from the jump it was animated. But to me, that didn’t change how I approached the music. Good music is good music—no matter if it’s real life or animation.”

What were some of the difficulties presented to you when overseeing a musical production with animated characters as opposed to live-action actors?

Timbaland: “With live-action, you can pull energy from the actors—their movement, their expressions. But with animation, you gotta bring the life through sound. The music had to be its own character, had to match the energy of the visuals. That was the challenge—making sure the beats hit at the right moments, that the sound elevated the story without overpowering it.”

Productions can be inspired by feelings and emotions. What was it like using those same techniques on made-up characters?

Timbaland: “Man, music is music—whether it’s a real person or a character on the screen. You still gotta make people feel something. That’s what I do. I approached this like any other project—what’s the vibe? What’s the emotion? Whether it’s tension, excitement, inspiration—it’s all in the sound.”

What’s Next For Timbaland

You’ve had your thumb on the pulse of the music industry and influenced film soundtracks like Romeo Must Die, Empire, Real Steel, and Lara Croft. What’s the next big power move for Timbaland?

Timbaland: “Oh, trust me—I got some big things coming. I’m always looking for what’s next, how to push the game forward. Right now, I’m deep into AI and tech, changing how music is made. But I’m also thinking global—more film, more TV, more ways to shape sound in new spaces. BE@RBRICK is just the beginning.”

Are there any film opportunities from the past that you might have passed up on that you look back at now like ‘Wow!’? Or any comic book adaptation franchises you could see your sound being a part of in the near future?

“Man, there were definitely some projects I probably should’ve jumped on. But I don’t live with regrets—I believe everything happens when it’s supposed to. As for comic book movies? Ooooh, I’d love to score a superhero film. Something dark, futuristic—give it that Timbaland bounce but with a cinematic feel. Somebody call Marvel, DC—let’s make it happen!”
