Directed by Benny Safdie, The Smashing Machine is a raw and observational biopic following MMA pioneer Mark Kerr (portrayed by Dwayne Johnson) during the peak years of his fighting career. Set around the late 1990s to early 2000s, the film explores Kerr’s brutal fights, addiction to painkillers and opioids, volatile relationship with Dawn (Emily Blunt), and the emotional toll that comes with fighting both inside and outside the ring. Premiered at Venice and screened at the Toronto International Film Festival 2025, the film challenges traditional sports‐biopic tropes while offering a deeply vulnerable portrait of its subject.
