Everybody smelled it: Now what fun would it have been if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stood in the middle of the SmackDown ring and presented a detailed outline of what exactly he meant when he told the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, “I want you to be my champion” or even when he uttered the words, “I want your soul.” It was vague. Yes, but you know what, that’s just fine. Surely when The American Nightmare delivers his answer to The Final Boss at WWE Elimination Chamber on Saturday in Toronto that picture won’t be any clearer than it was on Friday. There are eight more SmackDown episodes and the WWE Elimination Chamber left before WrestleMania, so to dismiss The Rock’s segment and the his post-show press conference as ambiguous isn’t something I can buy. We are talking about The Rock, arguably the best to ever pick up a microphone. The Rock is too good and calculated for that, and that goes for breaking that fourth wall in the post-show presser when he talked about not needing to face Rhodes in the ring. The Rock’s music-less exit and subtle stop and smirk added a lot to the unknown. He said: “Nobody slaps me and gets away with it,” but we tend to gloss over that. Sure, there were more questions than answers following the segment, but the possibilities over the next two months are endless, and isn’t that what we are invested in?

A little more clarity: The good thing about Rhodes hopping between SmackDown and Raw is that you can cover a lot of ground quickly. While it shouldn’t have been a surprise that the Undisputed WWE Champion showed up on Raw to address The Rock’s proposition from a few days earlier, it was considering the WWE Elimination Chamber deadline is so close. Sure, Rhodes hinted that his answer will be a “hell no” to the invitation of being The Final Boss’ champ, but this was before Seth “Freakin” Rollins interrupted. As I mentioned weeks ago, the number of people coming after Rhodes can now be counted on two hands and that shouldn’t be ignored. Ultimately, the jealousy could force Cody over to The Final Boss. Rollins’ strong mic work was on display again as he continued down this moral high road of calling out those who needed to be called out while overcoming the same demons to have a clearer vision of what happened. “The fact that you didn’t slap him in the face… is a slap in my face,” was Rollins’ top moment of the segment.

Even creepy for KO: Kevin Owens sitting outside Sami Zayn’s house and then filming his former best friend and his wife and child added an extra layer of creepiness to KO’s transformation into an unhinged and sick human being. Owens looking the part with an unkempt beard added an ominous vibe to the scene that maybe he might do something off the rails at Saturday’s Unsanctioned Match at WWE Elimination Chamber. Owens truly believes that he’s right (like his t-shirt says) and that Sami is the one to blame for all that has happened and what will happen. It works because he believes that wholeheartedly, and you know what, after that minute segment, how can you not believe it too?

Not the same appeal: Zayn’s rebuttal via a pre-taped segment wasn’t expected, nor did it hit with as much impact as Owens’. This has more to do with KO than Zayn. I believe Owens is unhinged. I believe that Zayn is a nice guy getting caught up in his emotions. Both can be very dangerous, which came across as the crux of this interview with Jackie Redmond. Zayn’s admittance that he showed up at KO’s house just to run into his mother sounded like something a 5-year-old says to his brother or sister to try to get back at their sibling to one-up them. When it comes to the Elimination Chamber, it is not going to matter. Owens and Zayn will bring it, and it has all the makings of overshadowing the Chamber and even Cody’s decision.

Werewolf’s transformation: It is one thing to be a rising star in the WWE. Jacob Fatu has been on that meteoric path for the past six months or so. It is quite another thing, though, to acknowledge the opportunity that has been afforded to him and run with it full-force. Every week on SmackDown, you can pretty much check off another box concerning Fatu. Forget about the inevitable rivalry that will happen between The Samoan Werewolf and Solo Sikoa, but the way that Fatu has embraced the alpha male role of his group after bowing at every action Sikoa made has not only been remarkable but seamless. Fatu demanded that Sikoa tag with him in the match against Damian Priest and Braun Strowman instead of Tama Tonga. Fatu ignored Sikoa’s, “I love you” declaration, cutting Solo off in mid-sentence as they made their way to the ring followed by instructing the crew backstage to play “his” music was much more interesting than a predictable misguided Superkick (with no remorse shown at all, I might add) that connected with his cousin. There is a new leader in town.

Cartoon character: There are only so many times that World Heavyweight Champion Gunther could reaffirm that Jey Uso is beneath him between now and the WrestleMania. So what does he do? He gives Akira Tozawa a match because he’s a “cartoon character” just like Uso (Gunther’s view, not mine). This was a great work by The Ring General. Tozawa had zero chance, and it was nothing more than an excuse to beat down a smaller opponent. The message was amplified by the fact that The Alpha Academy is well-liked and never harmed anybody, with Otis being such a lovable character. I can see a lot more segments like this leading up to WrestleMania potentially continuing with Otis as soon as Monday

Reading between the lines: I don’t want to take anything away from Raw’s main event of Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez taking the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship away from Bianca Belair and Naomi because it was a banger of a match that had numerous near-falls, plenty of quality spots and some excessive interference by “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio. The crowd was hot for this one, and Liv Morgan continued to be a high-end player. Still, you don’t normally see gold changing hands on a Raw, especially the final Raw before a PLE like WWE Elimination Chamber. All four need to be applauded for their quality of work, but what will be the long-term implications? You just don’t drop the titles and that’s it? To me, everything points to the inevitable return of Jade Cargill at WWE Elimination Chamber that will then have a trickle-down effect.

AJ MIA: Bron Breakker still seems like a rudderless Intercontinental Champion to me. He disposed of “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio without breaking a sweat on Raw, as well as he should have, and I expected to see AJ Styles charge in and take out Breakker after the bell. But that didn’t happen. Styles not showing up was unexpected, for sure. Breakker enhanced his dominance by fighting off Carlito and Finn Bálor, but it didn’t do anything for The Phenomenal One and what seems to me like a bubbling rivalry in the making.

Another member?: How many times is “Dirty” Dom going to point out to Finn Bálor that The Judgment Day need another member since the injury to JD McDonough? During the backstage interaction inside the Clubhouse on Raw, Bálor once again didn’t want to hear anything about needing a new member. Actually, it isn’t a bad idea. Maybe “The Demon”, Finn Bálor’s alter ego, could be be that proverbial added member of Judgment Day. A painting of The Demon was seen behind Bálor when he was discussing it was Dom. Hmm, just a thought.

Odds and Ends: I would say that the Melo don’t Miz thing might work and was a bright spot of SmackDown, but unfortunately for those two, The Street Profits, and may I say rightfully so, put actions to their words from last week and left the ruins of #DIY, Motor City Machine Guns and Pretty Deadly … It was nice to see Jimmy Uso get a win over a quality opponent like Drew McIntyre. Don’t worry, Drew can absorb a defeat like that …  At this point, does anybody feel that WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton stands any chance against Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania? … Nothing wrong with Logan Paul’s backhanded slap at Bengals fans at Cincinnati’s Heritage Bank Center which was predictable yet humorous. … Are we going to see CM Punk vs. Paul at WrestleMania? That’s now two disputes they’ve had – Royal Rumble and Monday night.
