I was talking to someone who had just gotten out of prison. He had turned his life around and was working a regular job.
I told him I was so proud of his recent accomplishments as we talked about his possible job promotion. Before we parted ways, he said, “I’m proud of myself. I don’t want to mess this up. I feel I need to be perfect.”
I responded, “If you fall, get back up, don’t waddle in it. Life is not about perfection; it’s built on consistency.”
Gym accomplishments are built on consistency.
Diet results are built consistency.
Credit is proof of your consistency to pay off debt.
College degrees are nothing more than proof of your consistency to learn a specific field.
Promotions come from others seeing your consistency and thus giving you more responsibility.
I’m sure there are people in the gym who have missed a workout and still look great.
People have messed up on their diet and still lose weight because they didn’t give it up.
College students have failed tests here and there but still got their degree.
It wasn’t perfection. It was consistency.
Even after accomplishing these things, there is still a manner of consistency that’s needed to maintain your successes. Once you start being consistent, it becomes a habit and something you can build on.
At this moment, what are you being consistent in? What could you be more consistent at?
Striving for perfection is great, but consistency is the key.
Just something to think about. I call it a dose of Colemanism.
