This is the sixth installment of “The Fountain of Youth” series.
Did you turn it off and turn it on again?
A humorously annoying statement to many, but it’s often what needs to be done to our phones to get them working right. It’s a reset.
It’s the first thing we do to our phones when things go wrong, but the last thing we do to ourselves when things don’t seem right. I’m talking about sleep.
I’ve always made mental notes about the power of sleep. We all figure the magic eight hours is great, but how do we get that nowadays?
I didn’t realize the ups and downs about sleep, or how irregular my sleep was until I started paying more attention to my watches with built-in sleep apps. I adjusted my sleep schedule to make sure I got at least six hours of sleep.
I didn’t see the cause and effect of it until the pandemic. This was when my sleep became very irregular. Either I wasn’t sleeping enough or I was sleeping too much. It wasn’t until I had to force myself back on track that I was able to see the benefits that structured sleep gives you.
I use the term “structured sleep” because I am a firm believer that our bodies react to structure. As I’ve said before, the body will do whatever it is trained to do, and that’s true for everyone from Olympians to couch potatoes.
Does your phone get more scheduled sleep than you? I try my best to go to sleep within the same hour every night and wake up at the same time regardless of whether or not I have something to do.
Sleep is the ultimate recharge and reset for the body. There are so many things that our body does best while we sleep, things that affect the brain, heart, muscle, and bone.
Structured sleep, along with other things, forces structure in my life. I wanted to make sure to add this to my fountain of youth. I hope you add it to yours too.
Just something to think about. I call it a dose of Colemanism.
