As part of the promotional campaign for Slammiversary XVII earlier this month, IMPACT Wrestling partnered with FC Dallas around its July 4th home match against D.C. United, which the host club won, 2-0.
With the victory, FC Dallas remains unbeaten on the Fourth of July since 2007 (8-0-3 record), thanks to goals from Santiago Mosquera and Dominique Badji.
IMPACT Wrestling World Champion Brian Cage attended the match, interacting with players before the kickoff and with both of the team’s fan groups, El Matador and the Dallas Beer Guardians.
In addition, the pre-game honor of “scarfing” the Lamar Hunt statue went to Cage, and he also participated in a halftime penalty-kick stunt that had Cage celebrate when a young, local FC Dallas fan joined Cage on the field for the PK — and when Cage was “debating” with the goalie, who just so happened to be the team’s mascot, Tex Hooper, the youngster scored into the empty-net. Both Cage and the kid celebrated — and with the goal, a $500 donation was made in Cage’s name to the team charity, the FC Dallas Foundation, as requested by Cage.
Cage watched the game in the owner’s suite and also in the second-half led the fan groups in cheers.
Members of both fan groups were special guests of Cage at Slammiversary.
