This week, Rey Fenix may have lost on Dynamite, but it’s possible he has a bigger fight on his hands that he may struggle to win. There could be a legal battle brewing over the rights to his name and trademark issues surrounding it.
Heel By Nature has reported that Rey Fenix filed to trademark his name last August, but complications have come up that may prevent him from taking ownership of his name.
Fenix placed his filing through Trademark Engine, given assistance by Masked Republic. Masked Republic has helped many trademark related filings by other luchadors, helping them gain the rights to their names. Fenix had his application denied by the USPTO on January 5th, his biggest problem coming from a case of confusion due to the trademark on “Fenix,” owned by Lucha Libre FMV.
The situation becomes further complicated as Lucha Libre FMV is currently stuck in a lawsuit against Promociones Antonio Pena, which is strangely the company that owns them and is responsible for running AAA Lucha Libre in Mexico. The situation forced Pentagon Jr. to change his name to Penta El Zero M because AA owns the trademark.
This is a sticky situation that could see Fenix possibly have to change his name. We’ll report more as the story develops.
