Here’s a preview of this weekend’s episode of “Ring of Honor Wrestling:”
ROH World Title Match: Champion RUSH vs. Shane Taylor
The colossal, first-time-ever singles match between two-time world champion RUSH and No. 1 contender Taylor pits two of the most intense, hardest-hitting competitors in ROH against each other. It’s also a matchup of two elite athletes who are at the top of their game.
RUSH has been nearly unbeatable since making his ROH debut in December 2018. “El Toro Blanco” has only been pinned once in ROH.
Taylor, a former ROH World Television Champion, became a co-holder of the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Title over the weekend when he and The Soldiers of Savagery dethroned MexiSquad. Taylor defeated two-time former ROH World Champion Jay Briscoe at Final Battle in December and pinned two-time former ROH World Champion Jay Lethal in a six-man tag match last month.
Taylor’s confidence is at an all-time high, and he believes no one — not even RUSH — can stop him from achieving his dream of being ROH World Champion.
“RUSH, I get it. You’re physical, you’re brutal. Growing up on the East Side of Cleveland, Ohio, that’s all I saw. This is home for me,” Taylor said. “RUSH, when you’re standing across that ring from me, the intimidation that you may bring to other people, you won’t find in me. You will see no fear in my eyes. You will see no intimidation in my eyes. As hard as you hit, I’m gonna hit harder. The physicality that you bring, I promise you I will bring more of it. The intensity that you have I will match and exceed.”
RUSH said he isn’t fazed by Taylor’s strong words.
“Taylor — talk, talk, talk, talk,” RUSH said. “Remember, I’m ‘El Toro Blanco’ RUSH and I will make Ring of Honor my empire. Remember … when you mess with the bull, you get the horns.”
ROH World Tag Team Title Match (Pure Rules): Champions Jonathan Gresham and Jay Lethal vs. Dragon Lee and Kenny King (w/Amy Rose)
As members of The Foundation, Lethal and Pure Champion Gresham are on a mission to “purify” all the divisions in ROH. As members of La Faccion Ingobernable, World Television Champion Lee and King are on a quest to own all the gold in ROH and will stop at nothing to do so.
“We are one win away from domination,” King said. “We’re going to beat these guys in a Pure match. Jon Gresham and Jay Lethal need to know that this is not their house. This is our house.”
Lee and King — who defeated 11-time former ROH World Tag Team Champions Jay and Mark Briscoe last week to earn the title shot — are phenomenal athletes and don’t need to take short cuts, but their willingness to bend the rules typically makes them that much more of a threat.
Their rulebreaking ways won’t help him this time, however. Lethal and Gresham insisted that the match be contested under Pure rules, which would seem to give the champions a distinct advantage against the “ungovernables.”
“To get these championships, you’re going to have to wrestle,” Gresham said. “You’re going to have outwrestle, you’re going to have to outclass, two of the best pure wrestlers in the world. But you won’t.”
