Here’s a preview of this weekend’s episode of “Ring of Honor Wrestling:”
ROH World Six-Man Tag Title Match: Champions MexiSquad (Bandido, Rey Horus and Flamita) vs. Shane Taylor Promotions (Shane Taylor and Soldiers of Savagery)
When Bandido and Flamita were unable to appear at Final Battle in December due to pre-travel COVID-19 testing, the ROH Board of Directors planned to strip MexiSquad of the ROH World Six-Man Tag Championship and award it via forfeit to Shane Taylor Promotions, who were scheduled to challenge for the belts that night.
Taylor and SOS sternly rejected the offer, declaring that when they win the title they’ll do it the right way.
“Ring of Honor tried to give us your six-man tag team championships. Shane Taylor Promotions is not a charity,” Taylor said. “Nobody gives us anything. We take what we want. And now that you’re all ready to go and you’re healthy, we’re going to make history the way we wanted to when we take those championships from you.”
STP is riding a wave of momentum into the match. They’re undefeated in six-man tag competition, having scored impressive wins over The Foundation (Jay Lethal, Jonathan Gresham and Tracy Williams) and the team of the Briscoes and EC3.
Taylor also is the No. 1 contender for the ROH World Title. He’ll get his shot against ROH World Champion RUSH on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” the weekend of Feb. 27.
As for MexiSquad, there’s no denying how talented they are, but will they be a cohesive unit? Because of the pandemic and travel restrictions, Bandido, Horus and Flamita haven’t teamed together since the night they won the six-man tag title in January 2020.
No. 1 Contender’s Match: Jay and Mark Briscoe vs. La Facción Ingobernable’s Dragon Lee and Kenny King
The winner of this match will challenge ROH World Tag Team Champions Lethal and Gresham on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” the weekend of Feb. 27.
Jay Briscoe’s obsession with fighting EC3 late last year caused a rift with Mark, whose sole focus was on winning the ROH World Tag Team Title with his brother for the 12th time. However, after talking things out, the Briscoes are back on the same page.
Standing in the Briscoes’ way of reclaiming the gold are Lee and King. La Facción Ingobernable has possession of the ROH World Title (held by RUSH) and ROH World Television Title (held by Lee), and now wants to add the tag team title to their collection of championships.
King, a former co-holder of the ROH World Tag Team Title, has had many battles against the Briscoes over the years when he was a member of The All-Night Express with Rhett Titus.
“Jay and Mark, you already know that I bring the fight,” King said, “but this time I’m not bringing 200 pounds of dead weight with me, I’m bringing the young Dragon, and he spits fire.”
Grudge Match: Mike Bennett vs. Bateman (w/Vita VonStarr)
The last time Bennett and Bateman faced each other was in a tag match at Final Battle. The OGK (Bennett and Matt Taven) defeated The Righteous (Bateman and Vincent) that night, but Bennett didn’t look like a winner.
All three members of The Righteous attacked The OGK immediately following the match. After zip-tying Taven to the ropes, Vincent placed a wood block between Bennett’s ankles and slammed a steel chair on his right ankle. Bennett, in excruciating pain, was carried to the back.
When Bennett was asked this week for a comment about his grudge match against Bateman, he didn’t mince words.
“Bateman, I’m gonna hurt you,” he said.
