Science fiction often thrives when it balances spectacle with humanity, and Project Hail Mary finds that balance in ways that feel both thrilling and deeply personal. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller—whom I’ve recently dubbed the Masterpiece Bros after their string of highly acclaimed hits like The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street, and their Oscar-winning producing work on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse—the film delivers a sweeping cosmic adventure anchored by humor, humanity, and emotional storytelling.

Based on the novel by Andy Weir and adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, the film follows Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a middle-school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory slowly returns, he realizes he has been sent on a desperate mission to solve the mystery behind a strange organism known as Astrophage—nicknamed the “star eater”—that is draining the Sun’s energy and threatening life across the planet.

The premise is massive in scope, but Project Hail Mary never loses sight of the human story at the center of its cosmic stakes.

A Big-Screen Sci-Fi Experience Built on Real Craft

From its earliest moments, Project Hail Mary feels designed for the theatrical experience. The scale of space, the ship interiors, and the breathtaking visuals surrounding the Petrova Line combine to create a cinematic spectacle that truly benefits from the big screen.

One of the most fascinating production elements is the film’s commitment to practical filmmaking. The directors have emphasized that there’s no green screen used anywhere in the movie, even though the film contains more than 2,000 visual effects shots. Instead, the production relied on LED volume environments and carefully crafted practical staging to create the illusion of deep space.

The result is a sci-fi world that feels tactile and immersive rather than artificial. The sequences involving Zero-G movement—particularly Grace awkwardly trying to suit up and navigate the spacecraft—add a sense of realism that reminds viewers this is not a trained astronaut at the controls.

Because Ryland Grace is not a typical space hero.

He’s just a teacher.

Ryan Gosling Carries the Mission

Ryland Grace is clumsy, brilliant, charismatic, and often overwhelmed by the situation he finds himself in. Gosling leans fully into those contradictions, portraying a man who understands the science behind the mission but struggles to see himself as the hero meant to carry it out.

Grace is not fearless. In fact, there are moments where he feels completely without hope. But the film constantly pushes the question of what bravery really means.

Sometimes the story reduces that idea to a simple truth:

Sometimes you just need someone to be brave for.

Gosling’s performance balances humor and vulnerability beautifully. His comedic timing keeps the film from becoming overly heavy, while his quieter moments reveal the emotional burden placed on someone who never expected to carry the fate of humanity.

Even when the pacing stretches a bit longer than necessary, Gosling’s charm keeps the journey engaging.

Eva Stratt: Leadership Without Apology

One of the most complex figures in the story is Eva Stratt, played by Sandra Hüller. Stratt is the global authority responsible for coordinating humanity’s response to the astrophage crisis, and she is tasked with making decisions that most people would never want to face.

To be honest, she’s a character you’re not meant to like.

Stratt is blunt, pragmatic, and willing to sacrifice almost anything if it means giving Earth a chance to survive. Yet Hüller delivers the performance with such conviction that you can’t help but respect the impossible position she occupies.

A surprising karaoke moment reveals a small crack in her otherwise iron-clad demeanor, allowing audiences to briefly empathize with someone forced to make unimaginable choices in the name of saving humanity.

The Friendship That Defines the Film

For all its science and spectacle, Project Hail Mary ultimately becomes a story about connection.

The bond between Ryan Gosling and Rocky is truly the heart of the film.

Rocky, brought to life through incredible puppetry and performance work by James Ortiz, becomes Grace’s unlikely ally and emotional counterpart. Their early attempts at communication lead to some of the film’s funniest moments, but their relationship soon evolves into a genuine friendship built on curiosity, trust, and survival.

Rocky provides something Grace desperately needs: purpose.

Where Grace sometimes struggles with doubt and fear, Rocky brings determination, humor, and collaboration. Watching the two learn to communicate and solve problems together becomes the emotional engine that drives the entire film.

It’s one of the most charming sci-fi partnerships in recent memory.

Small Moments That Ground the Story

The Earth-based flashbacks also add welcome texture to the narrative. Some of the most enjoyable scenes involve Grace interacting with Carl played by Lionel Boyce, particularly during their hardware store shopping moments.

These scenes reinforce the idea that Grace was never meant to be a heroic astronaut figure. He’s simply someone who understands science, enjoys experimenting, and genuinely wants to help solve problems.

Those grounded interactions make the scale of the mission feel even larger once he’s alone in space.

A Few Rough Edges in an Otherwise Stellar Ride

Despite its strengths, Project Hail Mary isn’t flawless. Certain supporting character arcs feel slightly underdeveloped, and there are moments where the pacing lingers longer than necessary.

Some storylines could have benefited from deeper exploration, especially given the film’s ambitious narrative structure. Yet those issues never derail the overall experience.

The film remains entertaining, visually striking, and emotionally grounded throughout.

Final Verdict

Project Hail Mary may not reach the legendary heights of genre-defining films like Interstellar, but it absolutely delivers one of the most entertaining and heartfelt science-fiction adventures in recent years.

With Ryan Gosling anchoring the film through humor and vulnerability, stunning cosmic visuals, and an unforgettable friendship at its core, the movie offers a full theatrical experience that reminds audiences why sci-fi storytelling can be so powerful.

From Amazon MGM Studios, Project Hail Mary opens exclusively in theaters and IMAX on March 20.
