Captain America: Brave New World is coming to theaters February 14. We spoke with Cap himself, Anthony Mackie, about how it feels to be in this moment, working with Carl Lumbly, and more.

Everything you’ve done: D23, San Diego Comic-Con, global promotional tour…you’re on military bases just skydiving. Did you ever think a black kid from the NOLA would be where you’re at right now?
Not at all. I started acting when I was seven years old in second grade. And through the course of my life, I’ve learned to love the idea of verbal communication and emotional expression. My biggest dream was to perform at the children’s tent at Jazz Fest.
It’s really amazing how you talk about the American dream and you talk about dreams coming true. And once you actually live it, there’s no way to communicate it.

Sam’s relationship with Isaiah Bradley is so crucial to his journey, especially now that he takes the mantle of Captain America. Can you talk a little bit about that connection. How it’s going to be tested and how does it impact Sam’s growth as a hero?
Carl [Lumbly] is the quintessential consummate great co-star. Every moment on set with him, every time we battle…he always has this fresh, really cool way of interpreting the words and coming at you and throwing you off guard. their relationship is kind of similar to ours.
I’ve gone to Carl many times for advice. And he’s come to me many times to talk me off the ledge. It‘s really amazing when you see the two of them and you see us in the mirror of our relationships. There’s a certain pride that goes into being this character and having somebody like Isaiah Bradley, who’s the original Captain America, on set. There’s so much appreciation and there’s a wealth of knowledge standing right there in front of you.
It shows why Sam would not take the serum. Sam is, he’s the definitive example of what’s good in all of us. So he doesn’t need the serum. His heart is his superpower.
