Series Showrunner/EP/Writer Gary Lennon Interview By Big Gold Belt Media

Gary Lennon is an award-winning playwright, showrunner, producer, writer, and director. Lennon is currently the showrunner and executive producer of “Power” franchise spinoff, “Power Book IV: Force” for STARZ.

Lennon’s career began in theater as an usher who got to see and study plays and musicals during his youth. A native New Yorker from Hell’s Kitchen, Lennon grew up poor and lost both of his parents before he was 13 years old, which led to some very difficult times and incredible life experience. He wrote his first play, Blackout about his getting sober when he was in his early 20’s that became the film Drunks, which debuted at Sundance. Lennon’s play The Interlopers received three Ovation nominations, two NAACP nominations and was an LA Times Critics Pick. A Family Thing was also an LA Times Critics Pick, earning six LA Weekly and two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Nominations.

Lennon made his directorial debut with his film .45, and has since directed two episodes of “Power,” both which he also wrote.

Under his overall deal with STARZ, Lennon was the co-showrunner and writer of two series: “Power,” which finished a six-season run in 2020 and earned Lennon two NAACP Awards, in addition to “Hightown,” which is currently in production on its third season. Lennon also serves as an Executive Producer of “Euphoria” and “The 12th Victim,” a true crime docuseries with Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville, and Josh and Dan Braun (Crip Camp, Sons of Sam).

As a writer, Lennon’s writing on television series “Justified” earned him a Peabody Award, a WGA Award, an AFI Award, and a Critic’s Choice nomination and his writing on comedy-drama “Orange is the New Black” earned him an Emmy nomination, a Peabody Award, a PGA Award, and a WGA Nomination.

He most recently sold an untitled pilot to Netflix with Patty Jenkins executive producing.

“Power Book IV: Force” centers on fan-favorite character Tommy Egan, played by Joseph Sikora, after he cuts ties and puts New York in his rearview mirror for good. As Tommy leaves New York after losing Ghost, LaKeisha and the only city he’s ever known, he makes a quick detour to close an old wound that’s been haunting him for decades. What was supposed to be a quick stop turns into a labyrinth of family secrets and lies Tommy thought were long buried. One step leads to another and Tommy quickly finds himself in Chicago’s drug game, inserting himself between the city’s two biggest crews. In a city divided by race, Tommy straddles the line, ultimately becoming the lynchpin that not only unites them – but holds the POWER to watch them crumble. As the first season unfolds at breakneck speed, Tommy uses his outsider status to his advantage, breaking all the local rules and rewriting them on his quest to become the biggest drug dealer in Chicago.v
