Captain America: Brave New World is coming to theaters February 14. During the Captain America Brave New World global press conference we spoke with stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, and Director Julius Onah to learn more about Sam and Joaquin’s friendship.

Nagier : Your on-screen chemistry and banter between Sam and Joaquin really lights up the screen. How did you two approach creating such a strong, fun camaraderie between your characters? Did you improvise any of those moments to make it feel so natural and effortless?
Anthony: I’ll say this, after meeting Danny and spending five minutes with him, it’s very hard not to like him and enjoy his company. His energy is infectious. I just love the fact that no matter what it is or where it is, it’s always him.
And for me, I never had to work on it or try and find anything for us to be friends or have that chemistry because from the first moment, it was there. It’s really weird. From the first moment I met this dude, like off the plane, he just felt like a friend. I can’t imagine anybody else being in that role.
Danny: I look up to you Anthony. From the moment we got to set, I just got to throw down with someone that I’ve admired from a distance for a long time. But I will say this because he answered the question perfectly in regards to our on-screen chemistry. It’s just been amazing to watch him be a leader on the set and create that culture that allows everyone to be themselves…
It gives you permission to be yourself fully. I think that also [gave] me the confidence when I [was] in a scene… to make all these choices because I feel good about the energy on set. Everyone’s rooting for each other.
Julius: The energy between them…it’s magical to witness. And I think everybody’s in for a real treat with this relationship between them.
