Like most, I was up watching the election results waiting to see who will be running our country. I want to remind you this week that no matter who wins, there are some things that presidents can’t affect, but you can. I’ve listed some of these below.
Personal improvement and development: This is something only you can do. You can learn new things or become better at something old. It’s an accomplishment that is self-rewarding. This builds self confidence in so many ways. Take fitness, for instance. If you start working out and are not able to do a pull-up, but then months later you can do 10, the reward is more than just strength. It’s also a literal victory that no one can take from you.
Your words: I’ve had to watch my words lately. Words speak to others and to ourselves. Words carry weight. Whether you’re making a promise or encouraging someone, those words create expectation and could fuel someone who is at their wits’ end. Words are so powerful that they can build a person up or tear a person down.
Your drive: Resolve is the ability to stick to something even when it gets hard. It’s a self-driven ability that you can’t buy. Many people are walking around today with a “should’ve, could’ve, would’ve” in their head that might not be there if the individual had more resolve. Forcing yourself to see a thing through to the end with your best efforts prevents you from wondering if a past opportunity could have changed your current situation.
Your impact: Personal impact is something I feel is easily overlooked. I think about the people that came to my school or to the local recreation center to encourage the youth to make good choices in our lives. I also think of the person that lights up every room they walk into because of their positive personality. The family member that checks on everyone else. These little things make a huge impact on people. Mentors and father/mother figures are the people who truly impact the future. It’s easy to only be concerned about yourself. However, if you think about the impact that you’re capable of making on others, it may change your outlook on life.
We let things like elections sidetrack us from being the best we can be. You may not be the President, but you can be present. Self improvement, watching your words, having resolve, and making an impact are things we can all do no matter who is in the White House. When I focus on things I can change, it keeps me from worrying about things I can’t.
Just something to think about. I call it a dose Of Colemanism.
