Walt Disney Studios closed out 2026 CinemaCon with a flourish, proving why they remain the standard-bearer for theatrical event cinema. Led by Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Alan Bergman, the studio unveiled a slate that leaned heavily into massive IP, technical innovation, and the return of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
The vibe of the showcase was described as “fan-driven” and a “victory lap,” with press and exhibitors praising Disney for once again allowing photography and video during the event as they have in previous years.
Monumental Marvels
The energy in the room shifted when Kevin Feige and the Russo Brothers introduced Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans to the stage. Downey Jr., sporting a Doctor Doom shirt, helped debut the long-awaited first trailer for “Avengers: Doomsday.”

The footage, which drew the strongest audience reaction of the entire convention, showcases a multiversal collision decades in the making. Highlights included:
- The Fantastic Four meeting the Avengers/Thunderbolts in the ruins of the Xavier Institute, where Mystique and Yelena Belova get into a bit of fisticuffs.
- Cyclops and the X-Men appearing alongside Shang-Chi and Gambit.
- A climactic shot of Thor hurling Stormbreaker at Doctor Doom, who casually stops the weapon with one hand.
Star Wars Returns to the Big Screen
Jon Favreau took the stage to present the first 17-18 minutes of footage from “The Mandalorian and Grogu” (May 22, 2026). The clip saw Mando and Grogu get put on a mission to find Rotta the Hutt (Jabba’s heir). The sequence culminated in a snowy planet chase where Mando commandeers an Imperial AT-RT walker to dodge larger AT-ATs. Interestingly, the film features a traditional opening credits sequence, making it feel even more like a standard “Star Wars” film.
Technical Innovation with Infinity Vision
In a move to standardize the Premium Large Format (PLF) experience, Disney announced Infinity Vision. This new certification ensures theaters meet specific standards for screen scale, laser projection, and immersive audio. The initiative will launch with the September 2026 re-release of “Avengers: Endgame,” serving as a technical bridge to “Doomsday.”
The Battle of Toys vs. Tech
Tom Hanks and Tim Allen joined the fray to present Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” (June 19, 2026) which felt like a “horror-parody” of the digital age. The footage showed Bonnie becoming obsessed with Lilypad, a kid-friendly AI device and parody of a Leapfrog LeapPad tablet. Attendees noted the scene where Lilypad mocks Jessie for being “really old” struck a chord, emphasizing the film’s theme of traditional toys fighting for relevance against screens.

Mixed Reactions and Future Strategy

While the presentation was overwhelmingly positive, some folks noted a few “lulls”:
- “Moana”: Despite Dwayne Johnson’s charisma, some felt the footage, while visually stunning, struggled to differentiate itself from the animated original.
- Aside from the exciting first look at the terrifying “Whalefall,” Disney is putting all their chips on established sequels and IP, looking to maximize “guaranteed blockbusters” rather than experimental originals.
