Disney brought the world of Descendants: Wicked Wonderland to life in Los Angeles with a colorful world premiere event that felt built for the franchise’s young fans, longtime Disney Channel audience, and the families who have grown up with this universe since its debut in 2015.

Held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the premiere celebrated the fifth installment of the hit Descendants franchise with a full cast turnout, immersive Wonderland theming, and a reception that leaned into the playful fantasy energy of the new film. Descendants: Wicked Wonderland premieres on Disney Channel July 16 and streams the next day on Disney+.

The event brought out franchise favorites including Kylie Cantrall, Malia Baker, Liamani Segura, Brandy, Rita Ora, Awkwafina, Leonardo Nam, Melanie Paxson, Paolo Montalban, and more as Disney invited guests to travel down the rabbit hole for one of its biggest youth entertainment celebrations of the year.

A Checkered Carpet Fit for Wonderland

Disney traded the traditional red carpet for a checkered carpet, a fun and fitting nod to the film’s Wonderland setting. It immediately set the tone for a premiere that understood the assignment: this was not just about showing a movie, it was about stepping inside the world of the story.

Inside the Academy Museum, costumes from Descendants: Wicked Wonderland were on display, giving guests a closer look at the fashion, character design, and visual identity of the new film. That detail mattered because the Descendants franchise has always been driven by style as much as story. The clothes, colors, hair, music, and choreography are part of the language of the series, and seeing those elements up close added to the excitement of the night.

Guests were encouraged to dress in Wonderland Chic, and many leaned into the theme. Giant flowers, manicured hedges, and a checkered dance floor transformed the reception space into a fantasy garden that felt connected to the movie without becoming overwhelming. It was bright, fun, youthful, and very Disney.

A Premiere That Felt Like a Family Celebration

What stood out most about the night was the atmosphere.

The premiere did not feel stiff or overly formal. It felt warm, lively, and genuinely celebratory, with the cast, crew, Disney stars, and guests all sharing in the excitement of a franchise that has built a strong relationship with its audience over the last decade.

A number of Disney stars attended in support, which helped give the event a real family feel. That matters for a property like Descendants, because the franchise has always been about legacy, identity, and the next generation finding its own voice. Seeing different generations of Disney talent in the room made the premiere feel bigger than one film. It felt like a celebration of what Disney Channel storytelling has meant to young audiences over time.

The food also deserves a shoutout. The themed cakes and treats were among the best parts of the night, with a decadent spread that matched the Wonderland aesthetic perfectly. For an event built around fantasy, color, and fun, the dessert presentation felt like one of the clearest ways the theme carried through the entire experience.

Descendants Continues to Build Its Own Legacy

In this new installment, changing the past comes with consequences. With the Queen of Hearts now changed and Cinderella safe, things appear perfect for Red and Chloe until a new threat emerges in the form of Maddox Hatter. When Maddox captures the Queen of Hearts, Red and Chloe must work with Red’s new sister Pink, Luis Madrigal, Hazel Hook, Max Hatter, and more to save Wonderland.

That setup gives the movie a fun hook while keeping the franchise centered on the ideas that have always made it work: family legacy, complicated parents, young people carrying famous names, and the pressure of deciding who they want to become.

The return of Brandy as Cinderella and Paolo Montalban as King Charming also continues to give the franchise a special multigenerational connection. For many viewers, Brandy’s Cinderella remains a landmark Disney performance, and seeing that legacy exist alongside a newer generation of Disney stars gives Wicked Wonderland extra cultural weight.

A Cast Built Across Generations

The film brings back Kylie Cantrall as Red and Malia Baker as Chloe, along with Leonardo Nam as Maddox Hatter, Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother, Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts, Brandy as Cinderella, and Paolo Montalban as King Charming.

New additions include Liamani Segura as Pink, Brendon Tremblay as Max Hatter, Alexandro Byrd as Luis Madrigal, Kiara Romero as Hazel Hook, Joel Oulette as Robbie Hood, Zavien Garrett as Felix Facilier, Ryan McEwen as Squirmy Smee, Dayton Paradis as Squeaky Smee, and Awkwafina as Chessy the Cat.

That combination of returning characters, legacy Disney figures, and fresh faces is part of why the franchise continues to connect. Descendants has always been a bridge between classic Disney mythology and the next generation, and Wicked Wonderland looks to continue that formula with a bigger, stranger, more colorful world.

Why This Franchise Still Matters

Since launching in 2015, Descendants has become one of Disney’s most successful youth franchises. The first three films ranked as the most-watched cable movies of their respective years, and the franchise has reached nearly 1 billion hours of viewing across linear and streaming in the U.S.

In 2024, Descendants: The Rise of Red became the most-watched Disney+ original movie among Kids and Girls 6 to 11, while the franchise continued to expand through music, merchandise, costumes, books, and the Descendants/ZOMBIES Worlds Collide Tour, which played to sold-out crowds across North America.

That success says a lot about the hold this franchise has on its audience. Descendants gives young viewers a version of Disney mythology that feels louder, more colorful, more musical, and more connected to their own ideas of identity and self-expression. It is fantasy, but it is also about figuring out who you are when everyone thinks they already know who you are supposed to be.

That is why a premiere like this works. It is not only about nostalgia. It is about seeing a new generation step into a world that keeps evolving with them.

Down the Rabbit Hole and Into a New Chapter

The Descendants: Wicked Wonderland world premiere captured what makes this franchise special when it is at its best: style, music, legacy, family, and a sense of fun that invites fans directly into the story.

The Academy Museum setting gave the event a polished Hollywood feel, while the Wonderland theming kept it playful and accessible. The checkered carpet, costume displays, giant flowers, themed treats, and family-like atmosphere all helped turn the premiere into more than a screening. It became a celebration of a franchise that continues to grow with its audience.

For Disney, Wicked Wonderland is another reminder that Descendants is not slowing down. It is still colorful. It is still catchy. It is still full of legacy characters and new faces. And most importantly, it still knows how to make its fans feel like they are part of the world.
