Get ready, Columbus! Our very own Nina West is bringing her best-selling children’s book, “The You Kind of Kind,” to the stage in a brand-new musical. If you’ve been looking for a reason to celebrate what makes you you, this is it.
The world premiere is officially hitting Studio 1 at the Riffe Center from April 2 to April 23, 2027, so you have plenty of time to plan.
Hometown Hero Spreading Joy
Commissioned by the Columbus Children’s Theatre, this musical is a massive love letter to individuality and empathy. Think catchy music, big laughs, and a whole lot of heart. It’s all about showing that being kind is, quite literally, the coolest thing you can be.
Nina couldn’t be more hyped to launch this in her hometown:
One of the greatest joys of my career has been writing my children’s book ‘The You Kind of Kind.’ To now be creating a musical with two people I deeply love and respect, and have it be commissioned in my hometown by the Columbus Children’s Theatre, is a dream I never even imagined. This story is really about my love for this city and the kindness shown to me. I am thrilled to see this project continue its own story here as well.”

Why It Matters
This project isn’t just for the kids, it’s for the “young at heart,” too. By putting on world-class new shows like this, the Columbus Children’s Theatre is making sure that stories about inclusion and being your authentic self stay front and center in our community.
The Dream Team
Featuring an original score by Caleb Damschroder, who also co-wrote the lyrics with Nina, the production includes a book by Eric Ulloa and Nina, and direction by Kevin J. Zak.
“The cornerstones of who I am today were built by the entertainment I consumed as a kid. Stories that taught me about the power of community, kindness, empathy, etc. To be able to be a part of this great legacy with “The You Kind of Kind: The Musical” is an awesome privilege that my fellow creators and I are deeply grateful for and excited to undertake,” Ulloa said.
