Nintendo is officially bringing Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team back into the spotlight. During today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, the company revealed that Star Fox, a modern reimagining inspired by Star Fox 64, will launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25.

The new title reintroduces players to Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare and Slippy Toad in a fully overhauled cinematic adventure featuring enhanced visuals, fully voiced dialogue, expanded mission briefings and a sweeping orchestral soundtrack. Nintendo describes the game as a modernized evolution of the Nintendo 64 classic, rebuilt to take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.

A Reimagined Return to the Lylat System

In Star Fox, players once again battle the forces of Andross across the Lylat System, piloting the iconic Arwing through planetary assaults, asteroid fields and intense aerial dogfights. Returning maneuvers like barrel rolls, boosts and somersaults are back, while branching routes and mission outcomes continue to shape each playthrough.

Nintendo also confirmed that the game will feature completely revamped stage visuals, cinematic cutscenes and expanded lore moments between missions. Worlds such as Corneria, Zoness and Sector Y have all been rebuilt with upgraded detail and presentation.

The reveal arrives after Fox McCloud recently appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, helping reignite interest in the long-dormant franchise. Now Nintendo appears ready to position Star Fox as one of the major first-party experiences for Nintendo Switch 2 heading into summer.

New Multiplayer and Nintendo Switch 2 Features

One of the biggest additions is the brand-new Battle Mode, allowing up to eight players to compete in 4-vs-4 online dogfights between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. Objectives vary by map and include territory control, energy crystal collection and cargo retrieval missions.

Nintendo is also leaning heavily into new Nintendo Switch 2 features. Players can utilize Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for precision aiming, while GameChat integration allows players to appear as animated Star Fox characters during online sessions. AR filters themed around Fox and Falco will also be available through compatible camera support.

Additional modes include:

  • Campaign Mode with branching paths and unlockable Expert difficulty
  • Challenge Mode featuring alternate objectives and replayable missions
  • Battle Mode with online and local multiplayer support via GameShare

Nintendo Looks to Expand the Franchise Again

The return of Star Fox marks one of Nintendo’s biggest revivals in years. While the franchise has remained beloved since the Nintendo 64 era, it has seen limited major releases over the last decade. With a cinematic presentation, expanded multiplayer and Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive features, this new installment appears designed to modernize the series for both longtime fans and a new generation of players.

Nintendo also appears to be pushing the game as a showcase title for Nintendo Switch 2’s social and interactive capabilities, especially with GameChat and GameShare integration becoming central features.
