Arc System Works America has released a brand-new trailer for River City Saga: Journey to the West while officially launching store pages ahead of the game’s upcoming release on June 4, 2026.
The upcoming roguelike action adventure will launch digitally for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Steam with a retail price of $19.99.
The newly released trailer puts the spotlight on the game’s three primary playable heroes—Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing—offering a closer look at the fast-paced combat, over-the-top action, and comedic energy that fans of the River City franchise have come to expect.
Inspired by Journey to the West, one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, River City Saga: Journey to the West reimagines the legendary tale through the chaotic lens of Kunio and the River City universe.
In this adaptation, Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and even Tang Sanzang are transformed into familiar Kunio-style characters as they embark on a wild journey toward Tianzhu filled with action, humor, and plenty of unexpected encounters.
Unlike traditional beat-’em-ups, River City Saga: Journey to the West embraces roguelike mechanics, encouraging players to grow stronger with each run while experimenting with different builds and abilities.
Build Your Ultimate Fighter
One of the game’s core progression systems revolves around Secret Skills granted by gods who randomly appear throughout each run.
Players can collect and combine up to 80 different Secret Skills, allowing them to create unique character builds tailored to their preferred playstyle. Whether focusing on speed, power, survivability, or crowd control, each playthrough offers new opportunities to evolve your character and tackle challenges differently.
The roguelike structure is designed specifically for solo players, providing replayability and long-term progression as players continue strengthening their heroes across multiple runs.
Three Distinct Playable Characters
Players will begin their adventure controlling Sun Wukong, whose combat style emphasizes speed and agility.
As the story progresses, two additional playable characters become available:
- Zhu Bajie – A power-focused fighter capable of dealing heavy damage.
- Sha Wujing – A long-range specialist who excels at controlling enemies from a distance.
Each character offers a distinct combat approach, encouraging players to experiment and find the fighting style that best suits their preferences.
Familiar River City Faces Return
Longtime fans of the River City franchise can also expect plenty of recognizable faces throughout the adventure.
Series veterans will appear throughout the game, sometimes assisting Kunio and his companions during their journey, while others will serve as challenging boss encounters standing in their path.
This crossover approach helps blend the classic Journey to the West narrative with the signature charm and humor that has defined the River City series for decades.
With its combination of roguelike progression, classic beat-’em-up action, and one of literature’s most famous adventures reimagined through the River City universe, River City Saga: Journey to the West looks poised to deliver another unique entry in Arc System Works’ long-running franchise.
River City Saga: Journey to the West launches June 4, 2026, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
