The game is no longer staying inside Jumanji.

Sony Pictures has released a new trailer for Jumanji: Open World, reuniting Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan for the final installment of the current action adventure trilogy.

This time, the danger is coming to them.

After surviving the jungles of Jumanji in the previous films, the heroes face a much bigger problem when Jumanji breaks free of its console and unleashes its chaos into the real world.

Jumanji: Open World opens exclusively in movie theaters on December 25, 2026.

Jumanji Comes Into Our World

The biggest twist in Jumanji: Open World is right there in the title.

Rather than sending the characters back into another dangerous level of the game, the new film flips the premise by allowing Jumanji itself to escape.

That opens the door for the franchise’s familiar mix of oversized action, comedy and game logic to collide with the real world.

The setup also gives the final chapter a natural way to raise the stakes. Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan have already survived the unpredictable environments inside Jumanji. Now the rules, creatures and chaos they thought they understood are no longer contained by the game.

For a series that has always had fun turning video game mechanics into physical comedy and action set pieces, bringing those mechanics into familiar surroundings feels like an appropriate final escalation.

The Core Cast Reunites for One More Adventure

The returning ensemble remains a major part of the franchise’s appeal.

Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan are all back, joined by Alex Wolff, Morgan Turner, Ser’Darius Blain and Madison Iseman.

Nick Jonas and Danny DeVito also return.

That means Open World is bringing together characters from both sides of the Jumanji experience, not simply the avatars audiences have followed through the game.

The chemistry between the cast has always been central to this version of the franchise. The action can get massive, but much of the comedy comes from watching these characters react to whatever ridiculous challenge Jumanji decides to throw at them next.

With the story now moving beyond the boundaries of the console, that dynamic has even more room to become chaotic.

Jake Kasdan Returns to Finish the Trilogy

Jake Kasdan returns to direct Jumanji: Open World and co wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.

Kasdan also produces alongside Matt Tolmach, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia.

The film continues to draw from the world originally created by Chris Van Allsburg in the book Jumanji, while expanding the modern film series into another large scale adventure.

This installment is being positioned as the final chapter of the current trilogy, giving the Christmas release an added sense of occasion for audiences who have followed these characters across the previous films.

A Big Screen Adventure for Christmas Day

Sony is placing Jumanji: Open World directly into the holiday movie season with a Christmas Day theatrical release.

That timing fits a franchise built around broad comedy, action and ensemble adventure.

The new premise also gives families and groups of friends something easy to rally around during the holiday break: familiar characters returning for one last game, except this time the game has followed them home.

The film is currently not yet rated by the Motion Picture Association.

Whether the characters can finally put Jumanji back where it belongs remains to be seen, but if the new trailer makes one thing clear, it is that escaping the game was apparently only half the problem.

Jumanji: Open World arrives exclusively in movie theaters December 25, 2026.
