Toy Story 5 Review: Pixar’s Emotional and Hilarious Return Proves This Franchise Still Has Plenty of Playtime Left

Toy Story 5 successfully balances nostalgia, humor, and heartfelt storytelling as Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang face the challenges of childhood in the digital age. Pixar once again proves there’s still plenty of life left in the toy box.

There was a time when Toy Story 3 felt like the perfect ending.

Andy grew up, passed his toys on to Bonnie, and audiences around the world struggled to hold back tears as Pixar delivered one of the most emotionally satisfying conclusions in animation history. Then came Toy Story 4, a film many questioned before release but one that ultimately justified its existence by giving Woody a meaningful new path forward. Now, with Toy Story 5, Pixar faces perhaps its toughest challenge yet: convincing audiences there is still another story worth telling.

Against all odds, they succeed.

Not only does Toy Story 5 avoid feeling like a nostalgic cash grab, it delivers one of the franchise’s most relevant and emotionally resonant stories to date. By exploring childhood in the age of technology, Pixar crafts a heartfelt adventure that feels both timely and timeless while reminding audiences why these characters have remained beloved for nearly three decades.

Toys vs. Tech Without the Lecture

The central conflict of Toy Story 5 revolves around Bonnie becoming increasingly attached to Lilypad, a new smart tablet device that quickly begins replacing traditional playtime. On paper, it sounds like a simple “technology is bad” storyline, but the film is far more thoughtful than that.

Rather than demonizing technology outright, Pixar examines the growing challenge many families face in balancing digital entertainment with imagination and personal connection. The film acknowledges that technology is here to stay while also questioning what gets lost when screens become the center of childhood experiences.

What makes the story work is its refusal to take easy shortcuts. The movie understands that the answer isn’t choosing toys over technology. Instead, it encourages finding a healthy middle ground where creativity, friendship, and imagination can continue to thrive alongside modern innovations. It’s a surprisingly mature message that never feels preachy or heavy-handed.

Jessie Finally Gets Her Time in the Spotlight

While Woody and Buzz remain major players, this is ultimately Jessie’s film.

Joan Cusack delivers some of her strongest work in the franchise as Jessie struggles with feelings rooted in her own painful past. Having already experienced the heartbreak of being abandoned once before, she views Bonnie’s growing attachment to technology through a deeply personal lens. Her fear isn’t simply about losing attention to a tablet. It’s about reliving the trauma of feeling forgotten, replaced, and left behind.

That emotional thread gives the film much of its heart. Jessie’s journey resonates because it taps into universal feelings of self-worth and belonging. Whether you’re a child worried about fitting in or an adult questioning your place in someone’s life, the film finds surprisingly relatable emotions beneath its colorful animated surface.

Several moments throughout the film genuinely hit hard, aided by strong performances, thoughtful writing, and a score that knows exactly when to elevate the emotional stakes. There were multiple scenes where it became difficult not to get emotional watching Jessie navigate those fears.

Buzz, Laughs, and Some Fantastic New Characters

While Jessie provides the emotional center, Tim Allen’s Buzz Lightyear delivers some of the movie’s biggest laughs.

His growing affection for Jessie creates a surprisingly charming subplot that allows Allen to showcase a more vulnerable side of the iconic Space Ranger. Watching Buzz navigate awkward feelings while still trying to maintain his heroic confidence leads to some of the film’s funniest moments.

The comedy overall is excellent. Toy Story 5 is packed with clever wordplay, visual gags, quick jokes, and character-driven humor that consistently lands. The laughs come naturally from the personalities audiences have spent decades loving rather than feeling forced or manufactured.

The new additions to the cast fit seamlessly into the world as well. Conan O’Brien’s Smarty Pants is an immediate standout, delivering several of the movie’s funniest lines. Atlas and Snappy also bring fresh energy to the ensemble, while Greta Lee’s Lilypad is given enough depth to avoid becoming a one-dimensional villain.

That balance is important because Pixar understands that its best stories are rarely about heroes versus villains. They’re about differing perspectives, motivations, and fears. Every new character contributes something meaningful to the larger conversation.

Pixar’s Animation Continues to Raise the Bar

It’s remarkable how Pixar continues finding new ways to impress visually.

Toy Story 5 may be one of the most beautiful films the studio has ever produced. The lighting, textures, environments, and character animation are stunning throughout, showcasing just how far animation technology has evolved since the original film debuted in 1995.

What impressed me most, however, was the film’s willingness to experiment. Several sequences blend different visual styles and creative approaches that keep the franchise feeling fresh. The playtime fantasy sequences in particular stand out, allowing Pixar’s artists to stretch beyond the traditional visual language of the series while still maintaining the charm and identity fans expect.

The result is a film that feels both familiar and modern, honoring the legacy of the franchise while continuing to push it forward.

Randy Newman Remains the Franchise’s Secret Weapon

No Toy Story film would feel complete without Randy Newman, and his return once again proves why his music has been such a vital part of the series’ identity.

The score beautifully balances humor, adventure, nostalgia, and heartbreak, often doing as much emotional storytelling as the dialogue itself. Some of the film’s most impactful moments are elevated by Newman’s ability to capture complex feelings with a few carefully placed notes.

Combined with the film’s themes of friendship, change, and growing up in an increasingly digital world, the music becomes another reminder of why these stories continue connecting with audiences across generations.

Why This Story Still Matters

The most surprising achievement of Toy Story 5 is how naturally it justifies its own existence.

After Toy Story 3, many believed the franchise had reached its perfect conclusion. After Toy Story 4, it seemed impossible that another chapter could feel necessary. Yet Pixar has somehow delivered a fifth installment that feels earned rather than obligatory.

The film modernizes the franchise without losing sight of what made it special in the first place. It embraces conversations about technology, attention spans, friendship, anxiety, and belonging while continuing to celebrate imagination, connection, and the importance of play.

More importantly, it reminds us why these characters continue to endure. Whether it’s Woody searching for purpose, Buzz embracing vulnerability, or Jessie confronting old wounds, the film never loses sight of the emotional investment audiences have built over nearly thirty years.

Still Plenty of Playtime Left

Toy Story 3 remains one of the greatest endings ever put on screen, and nobody would have complained if Pixar had stopped there. Yet here we are, two films later, and remarkably, the studio still hasn’t made a bad Toy Story movie.

Toy Story 5 is funny, heartfelt, visually stunning, and surprisingly thoughtful. It successfully updates the franchise for a new generation while preserving everything longtime fans have loved from the beginning. More importantly, it proves these characters still have meaningful stories left to tell.

At one point, it becomes clear that Toy Story 5 doesn’t simply exist because Pixar can make another sequel. It exists because the studio found something worth saying about childhood, imagination, and connection in a rapidly changing world.

And after watching it, I find myself feeling something I never expected to feel after five films:

I’m completely ready for another adventure.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
