Nearly three decades after Woody first tipped his hat and Buzz Lightyear blasted toward infinity and beyond, Disney and Pixar proved there’s still plenty of magic left in the toy box.
The world premiere of Toy Story 5 at the Dolby Theatre wasn’t simply a celebration of the latest chapter in one of animation’s most beloved franchises. It was a full-circle moment for an entire generation that grew up alongside these characters, while introducing a new generation of families to the timeless power of imagination, friendship, and play.
For many millennials in attendance, the evening felt deeply personal. The original Toy Story helped define childhood for countless fans, and now, years later, many of those same fans are parents themselves. That perspective gives Toy Story 5 an added emotional weight, particularly as the film explores a topic that feels increasingly relevant in today’s world: the growing tension between technology and imagination.
In Toy Story 5, Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of Bonnie’s toys face a challenge unlike any they’ve encountered before when they come face-to-face with Lilypad, a tablet device voiced by Greta Lee. The film’s central conflict asks an important question: what happens when screens begin replacing traditional play?
Rather than offering easy answers, Pixar uses its signature blend of humor, heart, and emotional storytelling to explore the changing nature of childhood while reminding audiences that human connection remains irreplaceable.
A Star-Studded Celebration for Pixar’s Biggest Return
The premiere brought together the voice cast and creative team behind the highly anticipated sequel, including Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Greta Lee, Conan O’Brien, Craig Robinson, Tony Hale, director Andrew Stanton, co-director Kenna Harris, producer Lindsey Collins, and legendary composer Randy Newman.
Also attending were Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, executive producer Jonas Rivera, and a long list of returning cast members who have helped make the franchise a cultural touchstone for nearly 30 years.
But while the film itself was the centerpiece of the evening, Disney had one more surprise waiting for guests.
Taylor Swift Delivers the Night’s Most Memorable Moment
Following the screening, the energy inside the Dolby Theatre shifted from emotional reflection to outright celebration when 14-time GRAMMY Award winner Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance.
Swift performed “I Knew It, I Knew You,” the brand-new original song she wrote and produced alongside Jack Antonoff for Toy Story 5. The emotional ballad immediately captivated the audience and served as a fitting companion to the film’s themes of growing up, change, and holding onto the relationships that shape us.
Then came the moment that sent the theater into collective disbelief.
Swift welcomed legendary composer Randy Newman to the stage for a special duet of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” the iconic song that has become synonymous with the Toy Story franchise since 1995.
For many in attendance, it was one of those rare entertainment moments that transcends celebrity. Watching one of music’s biggest stars share the stage with the composer whose music helped define generations of Pixar storytelling felt like a symbolic passing of the torch while honoring the legacy that made it all possible.
It was emotional. It was nostalgic. And it was impossible not to sing along.
More Than a Premiere, It Felt Like a Toy Story Celebration
The celebration continued long after the credits rolled.
Outside the theater, Disney transformed the after-party into an immersive Toy Story playground packed with interactive experiences, family-friendly activities, themed installations, and enough nostalgia to keep guests smiling for hours.
Guests could customize lunchboxes covered in Toy Story stickers, design friendship bracelets, create personalized bandanas, sketch keepsakes at a Sharpie art station, and explore a variety of themed activations inspired by the film.
Families filled the space as children tested their skills on a rock-climbing wall while others lined up for the crowd-favorite Saddle Up challenge, where participants attempted to reel in a toy horse. Food stations featured everything from Yogurtland treats to Papa Johns favorites, while Impossible Burgers ensured there were options for plant-based guests as well.
What stood out most wasn’t the scale of the activations but the atmosphere.
The event felt less like a corporate premiere and more like a neighborhood block party hosted by Andy’s toy chest itself. Parents played alongside their children. Friends laughed their way through activities together. Complete strangers connected through shared memories of a franchise that has been part of their lives for decades.
A Premiere With Heart
One of the evening’s most meaningful moments happened before the film even began.
During the red carpet festivities, attendees were invited to write heartfelt messages to children receiving treatment in hospitals across the country. Through Disney’s partnership with Starlight Children’s Foundation, Toy Story 5 will be made available to nearly 400 hospitals through the Disney Movie Moments program, allowing young patients to experience the film while it is still playing in theaters.
Disney is also expanding the initiative by transforming hospital play spaces into Bonnie’s room at select locations while hosting special screenings, character visits, and themed activities for families.
It was a reminder that while Toy Story may be built around animated toys, its impact has always been rooted in something very human.
More Than a Sequel, It’s a Conversation Between Generations
What makes Toy Story 5 resonate isn’t simply the return of beloved characters.
It’s the film’s willingness to engage with the realities of modern childhood while still embracing the wonder that has defined the franchise since the beginning.
Children today are growing up in a world filled with screens, algorithms, and endless digital distractions. Yet Toy Story 5 argues that imagination, friendship, creativity, and meaningful human connection remain just as important as ever.
That message feels especially powerful for the adults who grew up with Woody and Buzz and are now watching a new generation discover them for the first time.
Judging by the laughter throughout the screening, the emotional reactions inside the theater, and the joy that spilled into the after-party afterward, Pixar has once again found a way to tell a story that speaks to both children and adults without losing what made audiences fall in love with these characters in the first place.
Nearly 30 years after the franchise began, Toy Story 5 proves that some friendships truly are forever.
