A Dose Of Colemanism: My Fail-Safe Rule

This is the fifth installment of “The Fountain of Youth” series.

Before I go any further or finish the series, I have to make sure I give you one of my best secrets. I call it my 80/20 rule.

Basically, it means achieving an 80% success rate. Out of everything I’ve tried, this is one thing I’ve held true to: I give myself a chance to fail. This is the kind of fail-proof security I’ve built into most of my “Fountain Of Youth” choices.

In March I decided to stop eating meat. Rhett Titus, among other people I know, looks extremely impressive without consuming meat.

I’ve cut back on at least 80% of my meat intake. I pick at Rhett and tell him I’m not a vegetarian or vegan, I’m “vegetestrian.” I’m still testing this thing out. I admit I’ve noticed huge benefits from this. Along with leaning up comes mental clarity, flexibility and far fewer digestive issues.

This 80/20 rule holds true in my fitness, health and even my spiritually, if I’m being transparent.

It allows me to get back up. There have been plenty of times when I’ve tried something and failed at it. I’d get mad at myself, and then on to the next thing. Adopting this rule allows me to get back on track a lot faster.

So what if I missed a workout? I’ll jump back on track tomorrow instead of giving up. It’s the same thing with my diet choices. In Christianity, we repent: “I messed up and I’ll try to get it right the next time. Please forgive me.”

Instead of holding myself to perfection, I strive for perfection knowing that I’m not going to reach it. In this way, I feel I can stay close.

My daughter made it clear to me once. She asked when we’re working out if we could count up when doing reps rather than counting down.

I asked her why and she said: “Sometimes when I get to zero I feel I can go more, and if I don’t make it to zero I feel like I failed. If we’re counting up and I make it to eight, I can say next time I might make it to 12, and that’s better than 10.”

I replied: “Yes, Gabbie, in many ways that’s how I live life.” This has made a huge impact in my fountain of youth.

Just something to think about. I call it a dose of Colemanism.
