When Miro opened up on Talk Is Jericho about plans that were pitched to him for WrestleMania that involved a featured match against Lashley, it opened up the door to wonder what else WrestleMania could have been like if Heyman’s visions came to fruition.
While Heyman had been Executive Director of Raw, he had several interesting pitches for WrestleMania 36 that could have completely altered the course of the show as we originally saw it. Ringside News reported that not only was Miro telling the truth in his report, but a current member of the writing team also revealed to them some of the other matches Paul Heyman had in mind for WrestleMania earlier this year.
While Heyman pitched Rusev vs. Lashley, the actual pitched match was Lashley & Lana vs. Rusev and a female partner, with Heyman having Liv Morgan in mind.
Heyman’s pitch list included Brock Lesnar vs. Drew McIntyre or Aleister Black, Becky Lynch vs. Shayna Baszler, and as a backup for Black a US Title match against Andrade. Obviously two of these matches made it to the show.
Heyman had suggested either AJ Styles or Seth Rollins to face the Undertaker, with the one not facing the Deadman to meet Randy Orton. While Styles got the match against Undertaker, Edge’s return set an entirely different path in motion for Orton.
Heyman had a Raw Tag Team Title match planned with the Street Profits, the Viking Raiders, and Gallows and Anderson. Obviously, the direction shifted there as well with the title match going to Angel Garza and Austin Theory.
It’s clear that Heyman had an idea what he wanted for WrestleMania. Plans are always subject to change and creative plans are almost always fluid in the WWE. With COVID-19 also in play as things began to build for WrestleMania, you have to wonder what could’ve been had Heyman managed to get things the way he envisioned.
