Mercedes Martinez shocked everyone by attacking Io Shirai on NXT last night. It marked her first appearance for the black and gold brand since losing a steel cage match to Rhea Ripley months ago and her first appearance on WWE programming since being removed from the Retribution faction.
It was reported that Martinez asked to be removed from Retribution, a move that some may think could cause heat backstage. A major angle and a main roster call up only to turn it down could certainly leave some people wondering if Martinez may have upset the wrong people making a decision like that. It turns out, that might not be the case at all.
Fightful has reported no one in WWE management is upset over Martinez for turning down the chance to be part of Retribution, and a RAW star has said she “didn’t ruin anything.”
As seen on tonight’s NXT, Mercedes Martinez is back on the brand. Shortly before the WWE draft, Fightful learned that she asked to return to the brand and no longer wished to be in Retribution. There was said to be no significant heat on her, with one person on Raw telling Fightful “you’ve seen the plans for Retribution, she didn’t ruin anything”
Considering Martinez is about to start a program with Shirai seemingly, it’s more than likely she’s probably in a better position now than she would have been had she stayed part of Retribution. We’ll have to see how things turn out.
