The IMPACT Wrestling archives are full of unforgettable matches and moments. As the stars of IMPACT! prepare for Homecoming, January 6th on pay-per-view, let’s take a look at other events to take place from Nashville, Tennessee – this week, it’s Lockdown 2012!
Lockdown is one of IMPACT Wrestling’s signature pay-per-view events, featuring an entire lineup of matches taking place inside the steel cage. Lockdown is reserved for some of the most personal and violent feuds – so it made sense that Bobby Roode was defending the World Championship against arch-rival James Storm in the main event.
In 2011, Bobby Roode shocked the wrestling world when he betrayed his former Beer Money tag team partner, James Storm, in order to win the World Championship for himself. The victory ushered in a new era in which Roode proclaimed himself the Leader of the Selfish Generation. On this night, Storm was looking for more than to capture the World Championship from Roode – he was looking for revenge. With nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, Storm dished out some brutal punishment. Roode tried to swing the match in his favour by smashing a beer bottle over Storm’s head but even that wasn’t enough to stop the Cowboy. Storm delivered a superkick so powerful that it sent Roode crashing through the cage door to the floor. Unfortunately for Storm, one of the win conditions was escape, meaning that he just won the match for his opponent! Roode may have escaped with the World Championship in his possession but he was not able to escape the beatdown from Storm, as the Cowboy stood tall at the end of the night.
Another featured contest at Lockdown 2012 was Kurt Angle vs. Jeff Hardy. This feud came about when Kurt Angle targeted Jeff Hardy after Angle’s son looked at Hardy as a role model over his own father. Jeff Hardy had earned a No Disqualification World Championship match against Bobby Roode. In previous meetings, Roode got himself disqualified to retain the title – this was Hardy’s opportunity to prove he was the better man once and for all. It looked as though Hardy was about to do just that when Angle pushed him off the top rope, costing him the match and the World Championship.
When the two men met at Lockdown 2012, it wasn’t about titles, it wasn’t about competition, it was about one thing – inflicting pain! Angle connected with a thunderous Olympic Slam off the top rope to the mat but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Charismatic Enigma. Later on, Jeff Hardy threw caution to the wind and climbed to the top of the cage. As the fans looked on in disbelief, Hardy flew through the air and connected with a devastating Swanton Bomb on Angle to win the match.
