With the IMPACT World Championship belt carefully placed on his shoulder, Pentagon Jr. was happy to address his title reign – because he is “very happy to make history. I am the second Mexican to win it (after Alberto El Patron); I am just proud to be in this great company,” he said.
Pentagon Jr. has quickly skyrocketed to stardom, perhaps faster than anyone in company history. In the WrestleCon main event, held April 6 in New Orleans, Pentagon Jr. won a triple threat match, defeating then-Champion Austin Aries and fellow Lucha Underground star Fenix. Then, about two weeks later, at the Redemption pay-per-view, originating from Orlando, Pentagon Jr. defeated Aries again to claim the title.
“I know that, in IMPACT, there is some of the best talent in the world … and I want to be the best among them,” said Pentagon Jr., 33, who has been wrestling for 11 years. “Since I was a boy I always loved wrestling, and one day I decided to prepare myself to compete with the best in the world.”
His drive has paid off. Pentagon Jr., has shined in singles and tag team action, winning titles around the world in both. He also was the 2015 Wrestler of the Year for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. Pentagon said his all-time favorite luchador is the legendary El Santo, and Eddie Guerrero was his favorite from America. His success certainly can be attributed to his in-ring style, which blends traditional Mexican, Japanese and American wrestling. And he wrestles with a “Cero Miedo” approach which, translated from Spanish, is: Zero Fear.
“That phrase (is) only two words, but (they) say a lot,” he said.
Pentagon Jr. said his career has been influenced by three legendary Mexican wrestlers: Konnan, Rey Mysterio and Alberto El Patron. And his real-life brother is none other than Fenix, the lucha libre superstar who Pentagon Jr. has both feuded with and teamed with.
“As a team, I always felt that we were very good. As rivals, (Fenix) is a perfectionist and always gives his best,” Pentagon Jr said. Pentagon said Konnan has certainly been a big factor in his success – in IMPACT and elsewhere. “It’s an honor to work with him; he’s always there giving me good advice that has served me throughout my career.” Pentagon Jr. said.
The two also had a friendly feud in late-April in Orlando – in bowling.
As part of the VIP Package for fans, both Konnan and Pentagon were bowling too, and their friendly rivalry was ever-present. Konnan said he was going to win the bowling championship, which featured six IMPACT Wrestling superstars competing. In fact, Konnan went Joe Namath, predicting he was going to win before the bowling championship before the event even started.Pentagon Jr. was as vocal, often questioning Konnan – and Pentagon threw the fastest ball. In the end, with success in the 10th frame, Konnan walked out with the bowling championship.
“It was fun, something different,” Pentagon Jr. said of the bowling.
Things will get very serious, very soon for Pentagon Jr. On the May 31 episode of Impact!, dubbed, Under Pressure, Pentagon Jr. puts the IMPACT World Championship on the line against former multi-time champion Austin Aries, and this time it will be a singles match. Will Pentagon Jr. enter summer with IMPACT gold around his waist? Or will he be chasing the champion?
