Prior to and during the Pure Title Tournament, Jay Lethal talked about facing his best friend and fellow co-holder of the ROH World Tag Team Championship, Jonathan Gresham, in the finals almost as if it was a foregone conclusion.
Tracy Williams had other ideas. After Gresham won the Block B Final, Williams defeated Lethal in a technical wrestling classic in the Block A Final on “Ring of Honor Wrestling” the weekend of Oct. 24.
Lethal targeted Williams’ troublesome shoulder throughout the hard-hitting, back-and-forth contest, but Williams fought through the pain to score the biggest victory of his 12-year career.
During the latter stages of the match, Lethal hit Hail to the King and attempted Lethal Injection, but Williams blocked it and applied a chokehold. Lethal made it to the ropes, but he had already used his three allotted rope breaks.
Lethal managed to shift his weight into a pinning combination for a two count, but Williams transitioned into the crossface, and the two-time former ROH World Champion tapped out at the 19:29 mark.
