If Mike Bennett is going to win the Pure Title, he’s going to have to do something no one has ever done in ROH: defeat Jonathan Gresham in a Pure Rules Match.
Bennett will challenge Gresham for the championship at the Best in the World pay-per-view on July 11 in Baltimore. The OGK member didn’t know whether his opponent would be Gresham or Fred Yehi until this past weekend, when Gresham successfully defended the title against Yehi.
Gresham is now 10-0 in Pure Rules Matches in ROH.
Bennett is new to the Pure division. He earned his title shot by winning a seven-man Pure Gauntlet Match in which he defeated World Famous CB, Joe Keys and PJ Black in succession.
Gresham has been blunt regarding how he feels about Bennett competing in the Pure division, which Gresham considers his division. The champion said he doesn’t respect Bennett because Bennett hasn’t earned his respect.
Bennett said he does respect Gresham, but added that this match is bigger than Gresham. Bennett said this is about his legacy and redemption.
