After winning the first-ever Bound for Glory Series, Bobby Roode earned a World Championship opportunity against Kurt Angle in the main event of IMPACT Wrestling’s biggest show of the year, Bound for Glory 2011. However, due to Angle’s underhanded tactics, Roode fell short and failed to capture the title. Everything you thought you knew about Bobby Roode was about to change.
The following week on IMPACT Wrestling, Roode’s tag team partner and best friend, James Storm, would challenge Kurt Angle for the strap. In a shocking turn of events, Storm made quick work of Angle to win the IMPACT World Championship. Fast forward one more week to when Bobby Roode defeated Samoa Joe in a number one contenders contest, setting up a dream match like no other. Fans were about to witness former tag team champions, Beer Money, do battle with the IMPACT World Championship on the line.
One week later, Bobby Roode challenged James Storm in what was supposed to be a friendly one-on-one bout for the gold. After some edge-of-your-seat action and numerous close calls, neither competitor could put the other away. Then, what happened next would shock the wrestling world to it’s core. After the referee was inadvertently laid out, Roode grabbed one of Storm’s signature beer bottles from ringside — and smashed it over his best friend’s head. Without regret, Roode pinned Storm in the middle of the ring to win the match. That night, Bobby Roode committed the ultimate betrayal — but in return, he was the World Champion.
This was the birth of a new Bobby Roode, better known as the leader of the Selfish Generation. Not only did he betray his best friend to win the World Championship, but he also cut ties with his entire family. Roode only cared about one thing — being the IMPACT Wrestling World Champion. With James Storm out of action due to injuries sustained at the hands of Bobby Roode, a new challenger would emerge. One of Roode’s former friends, AJ Styles, made his intentions clear – not only was he coming for the World Title but he was going to teach Roode a lesson in respect.
The lights were on bright as the two warriors met in the main event of Turning Point 2011, live on pay-per-view. It looked as though Styles had Roode beat on multiple occasions but give credit where credit is due, Roode refused to stay down. The match was in it’s final stages when Roode decided to bend the rules in his favour once again. Roode rolled up Styles with a hold of the tights for leverage in order to score the pinfall and retain the IMPACT World Championship.
AJ Styles would get another shot at Bobby Roode’s title. However, this was no ordinary match – it was a 30-minute Ironman match! The show was called Final Resolution – but would it be theirs?
