Here’s a preview of this weekend’s episode of “Ring of Honor Wrestling:”
VIOLENCE VS. PURE
Violence Unlimited (Brody King, Chris Dickinson, Homicide and Tony Deppen) and The Foundation (Jay Lethal, Jonathan Gresham, Tracy Williams and Rhett Titus) have very different philosophies for what pro wrestling should be, and they’re going to war in three separate matches in an effort to prove which approach is superior.
Is violence the answer? Or will pure wrestling prevail?
Homicide vs. Jay Lethal
These two former ROH World Champions have plenty of history, going all the way back to 2002 when they faced each other in a dark match at the inaugural Final Battle.
They’ve traded victories over the years in ROH and elsewhere, with Lethal winning their last one-on-match at Death Before Dishonor in 2012.
Homicide re-introduced himself to Lethal after a seven-year absence in ROH by hitting a Gringo Killer on him at the end of the 19th Anniversary show earlier this year.
While they’re both highly decorated veterans, that’s where the similarities end.
Lethal wants to defeat opponents with legal wrestling holds and he believes strongly in the Code of Honor; Homicide believes in winning by any means necessary and will carve up an opponent’s forehead with a fork just for fun.
Brody King & Chris Dickinson vs. Jonathan Gresham & Tracy Williams
This matchup pits the size and power of King and Dickinson against the technical skills of Gresham and Williams.
In addition to being stablemates, King and Dickinson have had success as a tag team in NJPW Strong and are both former co-holders of the ROH World Tag Team Title.
Gresham and Williams, who also are former co-holders of the ROH World Tag Team Title, have been on the same side in numerous six-man and eight-man tag matches, but this is the first time they’ll be teaming together in a traditional tag match.
Tony Deppen vs. Rhett Titus
Deppen is an outstanding Pure wrestler, but he prefers violence and has chosen to fight alongside the like-minded King, Dickinson and Homicide.
Conversely, Titus has abandoned his rulebreaking past and embraced the Pure style.
Titus is in the best shape of his life and has the edge in experience, while Deppen is a former ROH World Television Champion just entering his prime.
