There has never been any denying just how good Jonathan Gresham is inside the ring. It was evident from his first appearance in ROH in the 2011 Top Prospect Tournament.
For years, however, Gresham’s win-loss record did not match his considerable talent. That changed in a major way in 2020. It was the year of “The Octopus.”
Gresham began the year as one-half of the ROH World Tag Team Champions with Jay Lethal, and then he repeatedly showed why he is arguably the greatest technical wrestler in the sport.
Having led the charge to resurrect the ROH Pure Title, the pressure was on Gresham to win the tournament to crown the first Pure Champion since the title was retired in 2006. He embraced the challenge.
Gresham defeated Wheeler Yuta, Matt Sydal, Josh Woods, and Tracy Williams in succession to capture the Pure Title.
At Final Battle in December, Gresham became the first man to successfully defend two titles as ROH’s biggest show of the year. He defeated Flip Gordon in a Pure Title Match, and he and Lethal beat PCO and Mark Briscoe in an ROH World Tag Team Title Match.
Along the way, Gresham formed The Foundation with Lethal, Williams and Rhett Titus. The quartet has embarked on a mission to restore honor to ROH by bringing pure wrestling to the forefront.
In addition to Gresham winning Wrestler of the Year, he also was a member of the Tag Team of the Year and Faction of the Year.
