The countdown is officially on for one of the most ambitious sporting events ever brought to Washington, D.C. Beginning May 29, fans will be able to request free General Admission tickets for the first-ever INDYCAR street race through the heart of the nation’s capital, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, taking place August 22-23.

Set against the backdrop of the National Mall, the Washington Monument, and the U.S. Capitol, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix is being positioned as a massive two-day motorsports festival celebrating America’s upcoming 250th anniversary. The event will be free and open to the public, with ticket requests handled through an online Ticketmaster portal launching later this month.

Excitement around the event has continued to grow since the race was first announced earlier this year, especially as details surrounding the course layout and fan experience have slowly emerged. The 1.7-mile, seven-turn street circuit will wind directly through some of the most recognizable landmarks in the country, creating one of the most visually unique races in INDYCAR history.

The circuit’s sweeping frontstretch will run along Pennsylvania Avenue with views framed by both the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol. Drivers will also race past locations including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Archives.

For Washington, D.C. sports fans, this is shaping up to be far more than just another racing weekend. It’s a rare moment where global motorsports, American history, tourism, and the culture of the city itself all collide in the middle of downtown D.C. The atmosphere surrounding the event already feels closer to a citywide festival than a traditional race weekend.

“We are so excited to celebrate America and our country’s 250th birthday in just 100 days at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington D.C.,” said Freedom 250 Grand Prix Chairman Bud Denker. “We want everyone to have a chance to experience this very special patriotic weekend featuring the NTT INDYCAR SERIES racing in one of the most historic and iconic settings in the world.”

Fans will be able to request:

  • Two-day General Admission passes for both August 22 and 23
  • Single-day Saturday tickets
  • Single-day Sunday tickets

The online request window opens May 29 and runs through June 7. Ticket requests will then be fulfilled through a randomized Ticketmaster drawing process, with fans notified afterward via email if their requests are selected. Each person may request up to four tickets per day.

General Admission tickets will grant access to one of two designated viewing zones: the STARS Ticket Area or the STRIPES Ticket Area. Fans should note that access to one area will not automatically include access to the other.

The Freedom 250 Grand Prix also represents a massive showcase opportunity for INDYCAR itself. With hundreds of thousands of attendees expected across the two-day event and millions more watching globally on FOX, the race could become one of the most high-profile street races in modern American motorsports.

The event is being administered by INDYCAR alongside multiple federal and local agencies, including the White House Task Force on Celebrating America’s 250th Birthday, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of the Interior, and the Executive Office of the Mayor for Washington, D.C.

As anticipation builds toward August, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix already feels like one of the defining live events coming to Washington in 2026 — a blend of speed, spectacle, patriotism, and citywide energy unlike anything D.C. has hosted before.

Fans can learn more and register for ticket access at Freedom250GP.com beginning May 29.
