The Las Vegas Aces returned to T-Mobile Arena on May 9 for their champion ring ceremony before their home opening game against the Phoenix Mercury. Though the return game was not triumphant, the ring ceremony itself was a grand time complete with violins and one-of-a-kind rings.
Honoring a Roller Coaster Season
Aces owner Mark Davis and minority owner Tom Brady were on hand to present rings to the team, the coaches, and Aces President Nikki Fargas. Players that were presented their rings on the court for the ceremony were Crystal Bradford, Cheyenne Parker-Tyus, Kierstan Bell, Dana Evans (although the announcer called her “Dana Ellis,” which is unfortunate), NaLyssa Smith, Jewell Loyd, Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray (with her adorable son), and A’ja Wilson.
Naturally, Wilson got the loudest cheers, so loud it felt like the arena was shaking. That particular moment felt significant, like you were truly in the presence of something monumental. In attendance supporting Wilson and the Aces were her parents, Roscoe and Eva Wilson, and her partner and Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo. Following the conclusion of the ceremony, Wilson came over to greet folks near the media section, along with her family.
The 11-carat rings themselves are pretty unique; set in 14 karat white gold with more than 500 white and black diamonds (Aces-themed, hello), and is two-in-one: the top of the ring comes off to reveal a smaller but chic Aces-branded ring. Young and Wilson enjoyed themselves throughout the ceremony, gagging over the rings after opening their boxes.
Wilson quickly got on the mic to show appreciation for the fans, especially through all the ups and downs over the years. The crowd roared back their approval.
