Pluto TV is leaning fully into fandom with one of the more inventive streaming activations of the year. To celebrate all 11 seasons of The X-Files now streaming free, the Paramount-owned platform launched “The Fan Is Out There,” a nine-day desert marathon experience in Joshua Tree for one lucky superfan and their chosen guest.

Helping kick off the event was beloved sci-fi actor Robbie Amell, who joined the winners in person and also shared his favorite sci-fi movies and shows available on Pluto TV.

Pluto TV Turns The X-Files Into a Real-Life Fan Event

The Fan Is Out There transforms passive viewing into an immersive genre experience. One superfan winner and their investigation partner were invited to disappear into an off-grid Joshua Tree facility for nine days to watch all 218 episodes of The X-Files.

The themed experience includes a living case board to track conspiracies and connections across the series, curated provisions like black coffee and sunflower seeds, and daily on-camera confessionals documenting the marathon.

Joshua Tree, long associated with paranormal lore and mysterious sightings, gives the promotion a fitting backdrop for a show built on government secrets, unexplained phenomena, and belief versus skepticism.

Robbie Amell joined winner Molly Hottle and her guest for a paranormal-themed dinner, stargazing, and a first look at the desert compound before the marathon began.

He also left words of encouragement for the fans beginning the challenge: “Don’t give up!”

Amell praised both the winner and the enduring passion of the X-Files fanbase, saying:

“Pluto TV pulled off something I genuinely didn’t expect, they found a fan who might love this show more than I do! Molly is the real deal, and getting to be part of her experience out here in Joshua Tree felt like a privilege. X-Philes built something rare with this fandom. I’ll be watching Molly’s marathon updates on Pluto TV’s Instagram and probably rewatching a few episodes myself.”

That quote gets to the heart of why the campaign works: fandom is community, not just content consumption.

“If you haven’t seen it, watch it. It might be an oldie but it’s a goodie.”

Starship Troopers
“It’s one of my favorite sci fi action movies growing up.”

The Island

Attack the Block
“An awesome movie, and I have to show some love to Franz, the other Firestorm!”

Why This Activation Stands Out

Many streaming promotions feel disposable. Pluto TV’s campaign feels smarter because it taps into nostalgia, community, and genuine fandom. The X-Files remains one of the most influential genre series in television history, and giving superfans a once-in-a-lifetime experience honors that legacy in a memorable way.

It also reminds viewers that Pluto TV remains a serious player in free streaming, especially for genre fans who want recognizable titles without another monthly subscription.

The X-Files Still Matters

Few shows shaped modern television mythology like The X-Files. It blended serialized mystery, procedural storytelling, horror, humor, and government conspiracy in a way that inspired countless successors.

Making all 11 seasons available both on-demand and through a dedicated 24/7 linear Pluto TV channel gives longtime fans and new viewers multiple ways to dive in.
