MGM+ is giving Godfather of Harlem the sendoff it deserves.
The premium network and streaming service has officially greenlit a two-hour series finale for the critically acclaimed crime drama, marking the epic conclusion of Bumpy Johnson’s story. Production on the finale is scheduled to begin this month in New York City, with Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker returning as both star and executive producer.
After becoming one of MGM+’s defining original series, Godfather of Harlem will close out its run with a final chapter built around legacy, power, sacrifice, and the ultimate reckoning for one of television’s most compelling crime drama figures.
Bumpy Johnson Faces His Final Reckoning

The two-hour finale will bring Bumpy Johnson’s journey to its emotional and explosive conclusion as enemies close in from every direction.
Across the series, Bumpy has battled criminal rivals, political forces, community tensions, and personal demons while trying to protect both his empire and his family. The finale will see him forced to draw on every alliance, sacrifice, and hard-earned lesson as he faces the question that has shaped the entire series: what kind of legacy will he leave behind?
For a character who rose from the streets of Harlem to reshape the power structures around him, the final chapter promises a conclusion worthy of the show’s scale and ambition.
Forest Whitaker Reflects on Playing Bumpy Johnson

Whitaker’s portrayal of Bumpy Johnson has been central to the success of Godfather of Harlem, bringing intelligence, restraint, ferocity, and emotional weight to a character caught between ambition, loyalty, and survival.
“Playing Bumpy Johnson has been one of the greatest experiences of my career,” said Whitaker. “This character, this story, and this ensemble have allowed me to explore the complexity of a man caught between ambition, loyalty, and survival. I’m grateful to Michael Wright and MGM+, Chris Brancato, 20th Television, Amazon, the entire creative team, and our extraordinary cast, for five seasons of exceptional collaboration.”
That sense of complexity has always been what separated Godfather of Harlem from a standard crime drama. The series has never treated Bumpy simply as a gangster. Instead, it positioned him as a man navigating power, family, community, race, politics, and survival during one of the most turbulent eras in American history.
A Defining Series for MGM+

Since its debut, Godfather of Harlem has become one of MGM+’s signature titles, consistently ranking among the network’s top-performing original series. Its mix of historical drama, crime storytelling, political tension, and character-driven conflict helped establish the show as a flagship part of the MGM+ lineup.
Michael Wright, global head of MGM+, praised the series and Whitaker’s performance while emphasizing the importance of giving the story a proper conclusion.
“Forest Whitaker’s portrayal of Bumpy Johnson has been nothing short of extraordinary, and this series has been a defining jewel of MGM+’s original programming slate,” said Wright. “We are deeply proud to give Godfather of Harlem the sendoff it deserves, a two-hour finale that honors the ambition, craft, and emotional power the creative team and cast have brought to this series from day one.”
For fans who have followed Bumpy’s rise, conflicts, and sacrifices, the extended finale format gives the creative team room to bring the story to a close without rushing the emotional stakes.
The Cast Returns for the Final Chapter

In addition to Forest Whitaker, the series finale will see the return of Ilfenesh Hadera, Antoinette Crowe-Legacy, Erik LaRay Harvey, and Rome Flynn, among others. Guest star casting for the finale will be announced at a later date.
The series was co-created by Chris Brancato and Paul Eckstein, with Brancato executive producing alongside Michael Panes, Forest Whitaker, Nina Yang Bongiovi, James Acheson, and Markuann Smith. Swizz Beatz serves as executive music producer, helping shape the series’ distinct sound and cultural identity.
Brancato expressed gratitude for the opportunity to complete Bumpy’s story, calling attention to Whitaker’s layered performance as the Harlem boss.
“I’m grateful to MGM+, 20th Television, and our talented cast and crew for the opportunity to complete Bumpy Johnson’s extraordinary journey,” said Brancato. “Forest has filled the role with his signature blend of intelligence, ferocity, and gentility, bringing to life the boss who ruled Harlem’s streets for more than two decades.”
A Crime Drama Rooted in Legacy
Part of what made Godfather of Harlem resonate was its ability to blend crime drama with cultural history. The series explored Harlem not simply as a backdrop, but as a living, breathing community shaped by politics, music, faith, activism, survival, and power.
Bumpy Johnson’s story sits at the intersection of those forces. He is a criminal figure, but he is also a man operating within a system where power is rarely clean and survival often comes with impossible choices. That tension gave the series its emotional charge and allowed it to explore the cost of building an empire in a world determined to challenge it from every side.
As the show prepares for its final two hours, Godfather of Harlem has the opportunity to end as it began: bold, character-driven, culturally grounded, and unafraid to examine the complicated legacy of a man who shaped an era.
The Godfather of Harlem two-hour series finale will begin production in New York City this month and will premiere on MGM+ at a later date.
