FX has officially unveiled the title for its highly anticipated Snowfall spinoff series, confirming that the next chapter in the acclaimed franchise will be called The Drop: A Snowfall Saga.

The new music-driven drama is set to premiere later this year on FX and Hulu in the United States and will stream internationally on Disney+.m

Created by acclaimed producer and writer Malcolm Spellman, The Drop: A Snowfall Saga picks up after the events of Snowfall and shifts its focus from the crack epidemic that defined the original series to the rapidly evolving world of West Coast hip-hop in the 1990s.

At the center of the story are fan-favorite characters Wanda Bell Simmons (Gail Bean) and Leon Simmons (Isaiah John), whose journeys continue as they attempt to navigate a changing Los Angeles while helping push West Coast rap music into the mainstream.

A New Era for the Snowfall Universe

While Snowfall chronicled the devastating impact of the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles during the 1980s, The Drop moves into the next decade, exploring how music, culture, and business became the new battlegrounds shaping Black communities and influencing American culture.

According to FX, the series follows Wanda and Leon as they fight to elevate West Coast rap during a pivotal moment in music history. Their ambitions are complicated by escalating gang conflicts and powerful record labels seeking to capitalize on hip-hop’s growing popularity.

The premise positions The Drop as both a continuation of Snowfall‘s character-driven storytelling and a cultural examination of one of the most influential periods in music history.

Gail Bean and Isaiah John Return

One of the most exciting aspects of the spinoff is the return of Gail Bean and Isaiah John.

Bean’s portrayal of Wanda became one of Snowfall‘s most compelling character arcs, evolving from addiction and personal struggle to redemption and recovery. Meanwhile, Isaiah John’s Leon transformed from a reckless street soldier into one of the series’ most thoughtful and morally complex figures.

Their relationship became a cornerstone of Snowfall’s later seasons, making them natural choices to carry the franchise forward.

The new series also expands the universe with a strong ensemble cast that includes:

  • Asante Blackk
  • Peyton Alex Smith
  • Simmie “Buddy” Sims III

Additional cast members include:

  • Mykelti Williamson
  • Nicki Micheaux
  • Brandon Mychal Smith
  • Isidora Goreshter
  • Eric Balfour
  • Richard Portnow
  • Zaire Adams
  • Demetrius Grosse
  • Quincy Chad

Notably, Quincy Chad will reprise his role from Snowfall, further strengthening the connection between both series.

Malcolm Spellman Leads the Next Chapter

The project comes from Malcolm Spellman, whose credits include The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World.

Spellman serves as executive producer alongside a team that includes:

  • Dave Andron
  • Thomas Schlamme
  • Julie DeJoie
  • Michael London
  • Trevor Engelson
  • Paul Garnes

The series is produced by FX Productions.

Why The Drop Could Be a Natural Evolution of Snowfall

What makes The Drop: A Snowfall Saga particularly intriguing is its focus on hip-hop during a transformative era.

The original Snowfall explored how economics, power, and survival shaped a generation. The spinoff appears poised to examine another side of that story: how music became a pathway to opportunity, influence, and cultural dominance.

For many Black communities throughout the 1990s, hip-hop wasn’t just entertainment. It was entrepreneurship, storytelling, resistance, and identity. By centering Wanda and Leon within that landscape, the series has an opportunity to explore how the culture evolved after the events that defined Snowfall.

The combination of music industry politics, gang tensions, and the commercialization of rap could provide fertile ground for the kind of layered storytelling that made Snowfall one of FX’s most celebrated dramas.

As fans await an official premiere date, The Drop: A Snowfall Saga is already shaping up to be more than a traditional spinoff. It looks positioned to continue exploring the intersection of culture, power, ambition, and survival through a new lens, while staying connected to the world that made Snowfall a cultural phenomenon.

The Drop: A Snowfall Saga premieres later this year on FX and Hulu.
