Hillman College is officially opening its doors once again.

Netflix has released the first teaser for its highly anticipated sequel series A Different World, confirming that the next chapter of the beloved HBCU-centered comedy-drama will premiere on September 24, 2026. The 10-episode single-camera series introduces a new generation of Hillman students while welcoming back several of the characters who helped make the original series a cultural touchstone for Black television.

At the center of the new series is Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon. Deborah is the youngest daughter of legendary A Different World couple Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. While her parents built their own legacies at Hillman, Deborah arrives on campus determined to create one of her own.

Unlike her highly driven family members, Deborah is a creative free spirit with talents in music, theater, and art, but she is still figuring out where she truly belongs. As she navigates freshman year, she must learn to step out from beneath the shadow of two of Hillman’s most recognizable alumni.

The series description promises a hopeful dramedy rooted in the traditions, humor, and experiences of HBCU life while remaining unapologetically centered on the richness and complexity of the Black experience.

A New Generation Arrives at Hillman

Joining Deborah is a diverse group of students representing different backgrounds, ambitions, and perspectives within the Black community.

The freshman class includes:

  • Rashida Duvall (Alijah Kai), a first-generation college student and criminal justice major determined to uplift her community.
  • Shaquille Johnson (Cornell Young IV), a highly recruited football star who chooses Hillman to honor a promise made to his late mother.
  • Amir Rodale (Jordan Aaron Hall), a psychology major known for helping others navigate their problems while struggling with his own.
  • Hazel Henry (Kennedi Reece), a small-town student whose time at Hillman challenges many of the beliefs she grew up with.
  • Kojo Achebe (Chibuikem Uche), a Ghanaian-Nigerian fashion entrepreneur balancing family expectations with his creative ambitions.

The character descriptions suggest the series will continue one of the original show’s greatest strengths: exploring the many different paths, identities, and perspectives that exist within Black life and culture.

Familiar Faces Return to Hillman

While the spotlight shifts to a new class of students, longtime fans will find plenty of reasons to come home.

Returning cast members include:

  • Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert
  • Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne
  • Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks
  • Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson
  • Jenifer Lewis
  • Dawnn Lewis
  • Glynn Turman
  • Jada Pinkett Smith
  • Karen Malina White
  • Charnele Brown
  • Ajai Sanders

The sequel also updates where many of these iconic characters are today.

Whitley has become a successful beauty entrepreneur after building a multimillion-dollar skincare empire, while Dwayne now serves in a prominent administrative role at Hillman and is working to help the school navigate a major funding scandal. Freddie Brooks returns as a respected law professor and mentor for students.

Debbie Allen and Original Creators Return

One of the most encouraging aspects of the revival is the involvement of many of the creative voices who helped shape the original series.

Original series director and producer Debbie Allen returns as executive producer and will direct multiple episodes, including the premiere. Showrunner and executive producer Felicia Pride leads the new series alongside executive producers Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers.

Allen emphasized the cultural importance of revisiting Hillman for a new generation.

“There couldn’t be a better time than now to reboot A Different World,” Allen said, noting the original series’ historic impact on HBCU enrollment and its role in amplifying the voices of young Black Americans.

More than three decades after the original series ended its six-season run, A Different World remains one of the most influential Black television shows ever created. By combining beloved legacy characters with a new generation of students, Netflix’s sequel appears poised to continue that legacy while introducing Hillman College to an entirely new audience.

A Different World premieres September 24, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
