Marvel Games and NetEase Games are taking Marvel Rivals into mythic new territory with Season 9: The Mystery of Thebes, launching July 10.
The new season introduces Jubilee as the latest playable hero, brings a massive evolution to the game’s Team-Up system, gives Black Widow a full character rework, and sets the stage for The Hood to join the roster during the second half of the season. Players can also look forward to a new Convoy map, a new game mode inspired by Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the Marvel Rivals Ignite Series Mid-Season Finals taking over Los Angeles.
Jubilee Lights Up the Battlefield
Fans can put on their shades because Jubilee is officially joining Marvel Rivals as a Strategist.
Known for her explosive personality and vibrant energy powers, Jubilee brings fireworks to the battlefield in more ways than one. Her combat style allows her to control colorful energy plasmoids that can heal teammates while damaging and blinding enemies. Her Ultimate Ability turns the fight into a dazzling firework show, delivering a flashy and dangerous finale worthy of one of Marvel’s most beloved mutants.
Jubilee’s arrival feels especially exciting because she brings a different kind of energy to the roster. She is stylish, expressive, and instantly recognizable, making her a strong fit for Marvel Rivals’ fast-paced team-based action.
The Mystery of Thebes Brings Apocalypse, Gods, and Murder
Season 9 centers on the Collapsed Timeline, where Apocalypse, the first mutant, witnesses the destruction of the world and turns his attention toward the gods. As he attempts to absorb their faith and ascend to godhood, he is mysteriously assassinated, triggering a series of murders among the heroes investigating his death.
That setup gives The Mystery of Thebes a darker and more mythological edge, blending mutant history, divine power, and mystery-driven storytelling. With Apocalypse at the center of the chaos, the season looks ready to expand the Marvel Rivals universe in a major way.
A Massive Team-Up System Rework Changes Combat
One of the biggest updates coming in Season 9 is a full-roster rework of the Team-Up Ability system.
Every hero will now have two completely independent Team-Up Ability loadouts, with each loadout featuring both a Base Effect and an Enhanced Effect. The goal is to bring a fresh combat dynamic to the game while giving players more strategic options when building team compositions.
Classic Team-Ups will also return, including Metallic Chaos, giving longtime players a mix of familiar combinations and new tactical possibilities. With the entire roster being touched by this update, Season 9 could significantly change how players approach team synergy, counterplay, and match flow.
Black Widow Gets a Full Rework
Season 9 will also bring a major rework for Black Widow, updating her full combat loop for what Marvel Rivals describes as an all-new experience.
For players who have been waiting to see Natasha Romanoff receive a stronger presence in the meta, this update could mark a major turning point. Full details on her changes will be available through the game update, patch notes, and hero balance adjustments.
New Map, New Mode, and The Hood Arriving Later
The new Thebes Convoy map will officially go live following the July 23 update, giving players another battlefield to master as Season 9 unfolds.
Then, on July 30, Marvel Rivals will launch the new game mode Path to Doomsday – Avengers: Age of Ultron. The mode sends players into Avengers Tower and Ultron’s Data Space to battle Ultron and his mechanical army. A series of events in the Times Square lobby will launch alongside the new mode.
The second half of the season will also introduce The Hood to the roster during Season 9.5 in August, continuing Marvel Rivals’ steady expansion of playable heroes and villains.
Marvel Rivals Ignite Series Heads to Los Angeles
Competitive Marvel Rivals will also have a major spotlight this season.
From July 29 to August 1, the Marvel Rivals Ignite Series Mid-Season Finals will take over Los Angeles. The top 10 teams from four major global regions will compete on stage for the first World Championship title of the competitive year.
